This is the A Lange & Sohne Lange One reference 101.021. Founded by Adolf Lange in the German watchmaking town of Glashutte, Lange has a storied history. Post World War II, the company was actually nationalized, leading to their company’s disappearance from the late 1940s till 1989. Post the communists’ abandonment of a single party rule in Eastern Europe, Walter Lange managed to return to his origins in Germany and re-established the company. Lange is often thought of as a watchmaking powerhouse, with workmanship, finishing and quality rivalling the best of the Swiss counterparts like Patek Philippe.

While the brand has released many memorable variants, their most famous is undoubtedly the Lange 1. Instantly recognizable with the off-centre subdials, the Lange 1’s design has clearly withstood the test of time given that it hasn’t changed since 1994. With the traditional outsize date, power reserve, time and small seconds all displayed ingeniously, the Lange 1’s design language is unlike any other.

This particular reference, the 101.021, was released a year after the original Lange 1 with a closed caseback. With the sapphire caseback came a change in the reference but they still utilized the same movement and was visually still the same. The 101.021 is powered by the L901.0 and was produced up till 2014, after which the brand released a new Lange 1 with a brand new movement.

The successful design of the Lange 1 has been a key to the success of this model and there is a reason why the Lange 1 has only received minor aesthetical changes since the first generation. As the flagship piece of the brand, the Lange 1 is a quintessential representation of the brand and is often the must-have for both seasoned Lange appreciators and collectors that are new to the brand.

Condition
This Lange 1 101.021 is in good pre-owned condition. The case has some hairline scratches from prior wear but can be easily polished off. There are no dings on the case. The caseback remains in excellent condition and the watch retains the original box and guarantee dated 2006. The watch is in full working order.
