It's Unofficial! I have my first Rolex!
OK, we need some background to the story...
After graduating from University in 1995 I started to pursue my Certified Management Accounting designation. Given that my Bachelor of Science didn't get me a whole lot of accounting exemptions, it was the start of a very long haul, with a few stops and starts, three different jobs, a marriage, and now our firstborn son (coming up on his 1st birthday!). Fast forward to this past April. With the last of the exams scheduled for June, I felt that finally going after the Rolex that I've always lusted after would be an appropriate way to celebrate finishing my courses. It was either a YM in SS & Platinum, a TT Blue Sub, or a YG Day-Date with the President band. Given the unique nature of the event being commemorated, I decided to pursue the President and began the online search. And then I saw the Day-Date in Rose gold! That will be my defining Rolex moment. The clouds parted, the sun rose, and the lights from the sky fell upon me when I saw that beauty! Some online negotiation got an amazing deal on a P-Series with the Rose Roman dial and fluted bezel. Coincidentally, Mother's Day was coming up - my wife's first. Not wanting her to feel left out when I finally got my Rollie, I negotiated a sweet deal on a lady Datejust for my sweetie. What better way to commemorate her first Mother's Day? Which brings us to the snafu and the dilemma! The snafu: Shauna's watch, due to the tight timeline, didn't get delivered in time for Mother's Day. So now I had a Rolex for her, but no occasion for which to present it! Solution: our 4th wedding anniversary was at the end of June so I had to keep her watch hidden for all that time. Thanks to the local AD for providing storage long after they were done the appraisals! The Dilemma: My new DD was to commemorate my graduation, and that's not until the end of August! So now I have my Rollie, but no occasion for which to present it to myself! Solution: I just wear it 'around the house' to make sure it is in working order and to test the timekeeping ability {cough}. Which brings us to the present. Still wearing it around the house and only my wife and boss (and AD) know about it. Here's looking forward to the end of August when I can say "It's Official!" In the meantime, I thought I'd share a few snaps. Man, I thought I was an OK photographer, but this macro stuff is killer! FYI - the second last one was the answer to the question no one asked: "What does a Rolex look like in the infrared spectrum?" More to follow - that Yachtmaster and a Lady President may follow sooner than we expected. m. |
