I killed a fake!
A work colleague has returned from a holiday in Australia and had travelled via Thailand where he happened to pick up a couple of fakes. This guy has form, his current watch is a "PAM Monte Carlo 2000." His first was a "Tag Carrera" which looked okay but not being familiar with that model, I could not tell much about it.
His second was an "Explorer 1" which he had bought as a present for his friend. At first glance this looked quite convincing, but then the flaws came to the fore. The LEC was massive, the quality of the dial printing was very poor and the bracelet was tinny to say the least. In other words a cheap knock-off. I looked at it and noticed in was still on far East time and asked him why he had not changed the time to GMT. "I don't know how to work the crown, it's a bit stiff." I gently unscrewed the crown and pulled it out to first position. It kept coming. Bang - one dead fake. Luckily he was not too upset that his "valuable watch" was dead, as he plans to take it to a local watch repairer and asked for my advice. My advice was short and sweet, "Bin it." Nobody will touch it and even if they did it would cost more to repair than the watch cost you. Buy your friend a bottle of booze next time." I've done some good today.
