The watches in duty free are not VAT free they just happen to have a discount equivalent to the VAT element and VAT, on the lower sale price, is still paid to HMRC. Therefore any purchase does not have to be exported out of the EU which is why M&W in T5 offered to send a watch to any one of their branches for collection when I returned to the UK.

The watch in question was the old style LV at approx. £3,400 and I'm beginning to regret not buying it!
