1988 DATEJUST Ratchet Wheel

Excellent web site for Rolex information!
My 1988 Datejust stopped working and I took it to Rolex Repair Shop. He is authorized to get genuine Rolex parts. He said it needed a service.
Anyway he cleaned, oiled, and adjusted watch. He replaced the crystal, crown, tube, and a ratchet gear. He gave me the old parts. The ratchet wheel was missing about 3 teeth. He also cleaned and polished watch. It looks new and is working well. Cost $850.
Question: Is it unusual for the ratchet wheel to lose teeth? Any thoughts on what could cause that?
thanks in advance
