Why would you take the chance of damaging it or getting it stolen? If he inherited that means this is more than just a watch. It's a piece of family history now.

Also, if he doesn't appreciate the watch now as much in his youth, I guarantee that it's sentimental value to him will only increase as he gets older. I like the term "a piece of family history".
