Ever have that "this is the one" feeling?
My family and I were Christmas shopping the other day in Knoxville, and decided to go look at a few watches. Well, we went to the Rolex AD, and to my surprise, they had all the models that I happened to be interested in right there for me to try out and compare until I was blue in the face.
The main watches I was interested in were the new GMT II-c, the older style GMT II, and the Submariner... all in SS. After some time spent with all the watches, I was surprised to find out that the one that jumped out at me most wasn't what I expected. I thought for sure I would love the new SS GMT II-c the most, but there are a few things that just aren't my style about it that I don't think I could get used to. I don't like the polished center links in the bracelet, and I don't like the particular shade of green they used on the 24 hour hand and logo. I'm also now not sure about the huge font they use to display the 24-hour numbers on the bezel. I guess I'm more conservative than I thought, haha. I loved the maxi dial and the movement, though. Being able to adjust the time zone forward and back in exact, one hour increments was just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. Overall, I liked the watch and I even wanted to love it, but there are some things about it that I just can't get over. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful watch, I just don't think it's for me. Now, if they made the watch with brushed center links, a black or unpainted metal 24 hour hand, a white logo, and *ever so slightly* smaller numbering on the bezel, they'd have a watch I'd probably kill for. But they don't, so moving on. The next watch I tried on was the previous model SS GMT II. Not much to say here. Again, great looking and functional watch, but it didn't really light my fire like I thought it should. Then came the SS Submariner. The plane jane, no 24-hour hand, no GMT-II style time zone adjuster, regular old Submariner. WOW! What a beauty! I tried this watch on, and something about it just struck me. I'm not sure exactly what it was, but it was great. The watch just looked and felt "right". It fit me perfectly. There wasn't one thing I didn't like about it. It's a watch I could easily picture myself wearing every day for the next 15 or 20 years. I think it's the one. I haven't actually made a purchase yet, but when I do (and it shouldn't be long), I know what will leave the store with me. So, how did you pick out your watch? What was it about your particular one that made you like it enough to take it home with you? Was the watch you actually went home with the same as the one you thought you'd leave with? Let's hear your stories. |
