First Rolex - Advice please

I am new to the forum and seeking some advice. I am looking at buying a 1990 2 tone DateJust 16233 with a custom made diamond and gold bezel. It comes with the box and original papers. The sale price is just under US$3,000.

If anyone could offer me some advice on:

1) what I should be looking for? (seller said I could taker it to the local Rolex shop)
2) pro's and cons of this particular watch
3) any other things I should know about buying a rolex (secondhand or new)
