Confession Time: I Used to Hate Rolex
Hi all,
I feel like I'm in need of a cathartic experience. I've recently become completely obsessed with Rolex; I have a 16610LV, a Tudor 79090, and now I'm on the look out for a 114060LN and possibly a Tudor 94010 if I'm lucky. Truth-be-told however, if you were to ask me what my opinion was of Rolex 6 months ago I would have probably bashed the company. Lets be honest, there are a lot of things not to like about Rolex. Sterile unchanging designs, lack of customer service, import controls, price, and we all know the reputation of owning a "Rolex" isn't always positive either. For a while I thought only guys who wore designer jeans with dress shoes, and women who wore polo shirts with the lapels flipped up, owned Rolexes. But a few months back something changed in me. At the peak of my watch collecting obsession I became uncompromisingly peculiar about my watches; the finish, the lume quality, the proportions of the watch, the quality of the movement. The once beautiful Sinn 556 I owned disgusted me at night when the lume fired up and revealed unevenness and spotty application. I grew out of the Omega Speedmaster I once coveted and quickly found myself selling it on the forums. I became a perfectionist. And in my obsession for perfection something caught my eye. The class, versatility, robustness, and simplicity of the submariner suddenly caught my attention. And while not very many watches are perfect, the Rolex's straight-forward design has allowed few disagreements to spring forth in my mind. Suddenly, what was once "tacky" became the ultimate embodiment of perfection. Swiss precision with a hint of German minimalist design. Although Rolex and Tudor has monopolized the space on my wrist, one's thing for sure however, I won't be caught dead wearing designer jeans with dress shoes! |
