The value of an older watch

My sis's best friend inherited a watch 10 years ago from an old boyfriend that she is no longer involved with. She has an older model explorer that she wanted to sell. I asked that she stay away from a pawn shop, and that I do not want her to get taken advantage of. I told her to look at ebay for a similar watch to determine an approximate value. The only problem is that the ones on ebay are not as old. Is there anyway to determine the approximate value of an older watch? Unfortunately my sis lives in New York, and I do not have the watch to find the model number.
