Kayci Hickox, please go away! Literally.
The nurse in Maine who apparently knows more about Ebola than the NIH, CDC, U.S. military and other public health agencies continues to disregard the concerns of the U.S. population and arrogantly refuses to isolate herself for a relatively brief period of time, thus reducing the chance of the disease spreading to those near her to zero instead of low but still possible. In the meantime, she joyfully rants about her human rights being trampled, basks in the glow of camera flashes and lights and excitedly anticipates suing someone or everyone with the help of glad-handing attorneys who make threat on TV news.
She is exhibiting the same disregard for the human population as the anti-vaccine crowd when they refuse to immunize based on false beliefs and misinformation in the name of "personal rights." Herd immunity cannot develop without the cooperation of the masses. Polio and smallpox would still be rampant today if current anti-vaccine sentiment had prevailed decades ago. Thanks to personal freedom, pertussis is making a roaring comeback. I frankly don't think that there are any measures that will stop the spread of ebola worldwide. But the idea that this one person (who calls herself and epidemiologist) refuses to cooperate with authorities scrambling to respond to the threat is repugnant. Her narcissism, arrogance and self-centeredness are frustrating. It's all about her, neighbors and social contacts be damned. |
