FS: Rolex 16550 Explorer II Black Dial Rare Transitional Model

Rolex 16550 Explorer II with black dial. The 16550 was a transitional model that slotted in between the outgoing 1655 "Steve McQueen" and the later more common reference 16570. It was only produced for about five years and was also the first Explorer II to feature an independently adjustable GMT hand which could be set without stopping the movement. To house this new 3085 movement, a new thicker case was required (shared with the 16760 GMTII "Fat Lady") which also had thicker crown guards and a unique square font on the bezel. This particular piece has serial number 9582xxx which is circa approximately 1987.

Condition:
Condition is "excellent" 88% per the TimeZone guidelines except for the bezel which has more substantial signs of wear as is illustrated in photos. Case is very crisp with original bevels still visible. The hands are several shades lighter than the dial plots, but this seems to be a common occurrence with this reference. Bracelet is a 93150 oyster fliplock with 11 links (short 1 link), 593 endlinks, and "K11" clasp code which coincides with the age of the watch head. Service history is unknown, but winds & sets as it should and is running well inside of COSC specs.
