Icon5 White powder appearing on watch crystal...?!

Has anyone had the same mystifying experience I have had, when using an auto watch winder? The watch was being turned, 1 hour in 3, for several hours overnight, when I heard a loud pop, and found the crystal face covered in a fine white powder. I cleaned it off, and no harm appears to have been done, the watch is working fine, as before.
Id be v interested to know what is this powder, and has it done any harm to the watch or internals? Also, would it have been down to the watch winder, ie. is it faulty; or would it be safe to carry on using it.
Thanks for any useful info.
