Crap! (Or opportunity knocking?)
So, last night I'm down in the basement shooting (the bow and arrow for those with sick minds......) and listening to some music, which I often do while training. However, I notice an odd sound coming from the speakers tonight.....sort of a raspy sound (not good!).
So, I put down the bow and check it out, and found this: and a closer look: The foam surround on the speaker cone is falling apart! So, my old faithful PSB speakers, bought with $1,500 of hard earned high school cash in 1980, have finally given up the ghost. Funny how we were just discussing audio equipment when this came up. These were pretty decent units for their time. The bottom cone is not driven electrically, but with air pressure (the cabinet is sealed, not vented) so the bass would come from the movement of the electrically driven cone above (passive radiator design). So, they still work, but it's kind of ugly sounding at the moment. Now I guess I need something new for the basement set-up, unless they still have parts available (which I doubt). Bummer! On second thought, I haven't been to the audio-toy store in a while, so maybe this is an opportunity! |
