I also agree with your statement about the overuse of the term. To me grail is something almost unattainable without some sort of outside sources. Something tenable even if it takes 10 years to be isn't considered a grail. Buying a DD40 or a gold sub is on my list to get. May take 5 years but doesn't mean its a grail. A grail in my opinion is a PP Grand Complication $150k. Most people cant or will justify having a watch that expensive and most would need some sort of outside source to obtain that. Selling of a company, Winning the lottery, Inheriting, inventing something.
So while most of you say its a term of defined goal i think its more of an unattainable goal which if for some how you do get it you've finally gotten your grail.
