15202 - issues with manual winding

After a few weeks of non-wear, I ran into a scare and would appreciate some insights from the movement gurus re: a 15202 I-series with the 2121 movement.

My questions are:

• Is it possible to have an issue with this movement where it can be wound through the self-winding mechanism but NOT manually?
• If not, what may be the cause(s) of the manual winding mechanism to not work in isolation (i.e. rest of the watch works just fine)?

Background if you have the time:

After setting the date using the quick-set forward by about 20 days, I noticed I was able to advance the date by just going back to 11 from 12 and back again but didn't think much of it (other than 'how neat', and how I've wasted the extra motions all this time).

With the date set, I proceeded to manually wind the watch with the crown pushed in (position 0) but the watch was not moving, confirmed by an idle balance wheel through the case back. I manually wound the watch some more to no avail but can see the gears (incl. the mainspring) moving as I wind, with some of the winding 'clicks' louder than others.

I was bummed at this point thinking how I'd need to go the APSC and be without the watch for months. Through separation anxiety, I put on the watch and through natural motions the movement came back to life. I haven't stopped wearing the watch since and it's kept time fine (with power reserve of more than overnight.
