crown tightness

hi all' just want to ask how to know when a screw-down crown is secure, tight enough? i always worrie that i am going to over tighten it. is there a general rule of tightening a watch crown? i have heard so many horror stories of watch crowns threads being stripped not so many with Rolex but essentially with omegas. thanks for any help.
