Long time lurker, ready to get more involved. I've always been an Omega guy, owning three Seamasters. I'm not a collector by nature - I'm more of an accumulator.

I always had a negative opinion of Rolex watches, due to some very limited anecdotal information. A partner in my old firm had a Datejust model and it kept lousy time. It was a gift from his wife, bought at a large New York high end jewelry store, so he wore it daily. He probably knocked it around and never bothered to have it serviced. "I never have to service my digital watch so why should I have to maintain such an expensive watch?" This and a few other similar stories steered me away from Rolex and toward Omega. The Omegas were nice premium watches, clean style, and half the price of Rolexes.

Then Rolex came out with the Deepsea Sea Dweller. I always gravitated toward meaty diver watches and long admired Rolex Submariners, so the Omega Seamaster was the closest analog I found. But Omega doesn't offer a watch rated for depths of 2 1/4 miles. TWO AND A QUARTER MILES!! In my youth I made some dives that would be considered "deep." Over 200 feet in the Gulf of Mexico. One of those dives exceeded the capability of my Chronoswiss watch and it leaked, ruining it. I appreciate an over engineered watch but the Deepsea became an obsession. I simply had to have the watch that could go (almost) anywhere on the planet. Of course the integrity of my watch at insane depths like the Deepsea can handle is the last thing I'd be worried about in such a situation, and I'd never even consider putting myself in such a situation. But dang! 12,000 FEET!! So I got one, first gen, and wore it around the house a couple times. Found I liked the more legible face on my Seamaster more and went back to it as my daily driver. I'm still enthralled by the Rolex style, and understanding the ins/outs of Rolex has strengthened my fervor. I'm looking to swap my Deepsea now for GMT Master II "Pepsi" or maybe an Explorer II.
