Paying $5k for a MontBlanc?

I think resale is important as it in most cases tells the actual value of what you're buying. If you're buying something for $5k and the next day it's worth 30-40% less, then you have clearly paid much more than what the product is considered worth.

This of course applies to any product you buy new, but especially for luxury timepieces I think this is important, regardless if you plan on keeping it for decades or not. Sure, if money is no issue, I wouldn't think twice of spending $5k on the montblanc. On the other hand, if money was no issue, I probably wouldn't buy a montblanc in the first place..

If you liked the looks and wanted the complications then 5k is a rather good deal in a watch.

If you care about the horological history and design then probably something in-house would be better, but not at this price range.

If you are concerned about what other people think when you wear a Montblanc, then buy a more recognizable watch brand.

At the end of the day it just depends on why you want this "dressy watch"

You hit pretty much every point.

1. I'm looking for a dressy watch with date-function.

2. I came across the MontBlanc and was really impressed with all the complications you get at that pricepoint. That was pretty much the main reason for considering a MB. Now researching it further, it seems like it's just a basic ETA with some added modules. A brand like Frederique Constant offers a very similar watch with the same complications at around $2k. Which seems very interesting to me pricewise. That it's a FC is not really an issue if I'm only playing $2k for all those complications.

3. Horological history is "somewhat" important. I would prefer a brand that has been around for longer than FC as I mentioned, but on the other hand I'm impressed with FC offers at the price. I am not really a fan of MontBlancs having a product line of 100 different items other than their watches..

4. I'm not that concerned about peoples thoughts. While people in my social circle are watch enthusiasts, they are not watch-snobs in the negative sense.
