They've implemented the same system in Australia. Self service supermarkets are the norm as well with only one to two people actually being on the checkout.

I refuse to use them personally as the practice while smart for the company is unethical

I don't use self-service check-outs either, but because I don't want to fiddle around around finding the little bar code labels hidden on packages to scan them. It never occurred to me that Ethics figured into the equation.
