While the iPhone's camera is pretty good, it is absolute rubbish in low light conditions. It also has no manual control, no real means of exposure control etc...
I guess you can get apps? But anyhow it's biggest problem is the tiny size of the sensor. Get an inexpensive SLR kit to start with. If you decide it is not for you, not a lot of money wasted. Photography is fun, although I'm in a several year long dry-spell at the moment.
