Well, I did it. I now have my first Rolex. I was surprised about the entire Rolex purchasing process - I knew absolutely nothing. It truly boggled my mind that the ADs did not have the "professional" watches. Said to myself: Excuse me Self, you mean to tell that watches are professionals? Why don't these ADs have an inventory? I thought a watch merely gives you the time plus whatever complications are on the watch! One AD in lower Manhattan didn't even have a waiting list - or at any rate declined to take my name. Why is it that ADs lack an inventory of watches that you can try on and see how it feels on the arm? Whats going on with this Rolex thing? I only began a search for a new self winding watch (now referred to as "automatic") because my eight year old microbrand watch with an ETA 2428 movement was no longer functioning properly. I had to set an example. Afterall if I don't treat myself well, who will? My search brought me right to Rolex's Explorer and that was it! IMHO, it is a really fine looking, sturdy timepiece that is highly versatile and accurate - I couldn't beat it with a stick! I noticed despite nearly nine years following the 2010 modification from 36mm to 39mm that there are purists and others who are still resistant to the change. However, I tried on the 36mm on the old wrist and FWIW even with my 7 1/8 inch (18cm) wrist the 39mm looked better. Now, I realized the 14270 and the 114270 are classics. However this watch is not going to some sort of safety queen sitting in a case. This watch would be getting a great deal of my wrist time, so I preferred to go with what I deemed to be the superior watch: "better movement, accuracy, the parachrom hairspring, paraflex shock absorbers, chromalight luminescence and the superior bracelet with the diving safety clasp." Now in the mere four days that I've had the Explorer, it is certainly meeting my high expectations. Of course I will be looking into getting some type of "timegrapher" in order to verify accuracy.
