Said goodbye to another kitty today.
We got 2 cats from the pound about 16 years ago when my son was a year old and wouldn’t sleep in his bed. He now drives my cars!!!
The one on the top we had to have put to sleep last month. His name was George and he was a real cool Siamese dude that was about 20 years old when kidney failure finally took him from us. King George as we called him. He was a bad a$$ in his day. The black and white fella was Gilbert. He was named after the cat in the cartoon Caillou. His story is this.........We had a dog that bit my son in the face when he was young. The dog was old and sick and we made the tough decision to euthanize the dog after he bit the boy. When we went looking for another dog at the pound my son wanted nothing to do with a dog. All he wanted was a cat named Gilbert because of the brat kid in the cartoon (if you have ever seen the cartoon you know what I mean. The kid is a total whiny D bag). My wife and I were not cat people to say the least. After much begging by the boy we relented to at least walk thru the cat room. And that black and white fella on the bottom got his attention. Needless to say, we walked out with a cat. Never in a million years imagining that we would be here 16 years later with two cats. We had no idea they lived that long. The pound guessed that Gilbert and George were both about 5-6 years old when we got them. The vet agreed. With Gilbert being a year or two older. We recently had been prepping the kids that Gilbert was old and was slowing down. Then George went from his normal daily life to his last days very quickly. He had kidney failure that we didn’t even know about until it was the worst lab result our vet had ever seen. Took us by complete surprise. The mission turned to keeping Gilbert around as long as possible. Then he began vomiting. Argh. To the vet we go. Thinks it may be a vitamin D deficiency and IBD. On drops and steroids we went. He was back to his youthful self, running around, eating like a kitten. Had 3-4 great weeks with him all roided up. Thought we had found the fountain of youth. Then one day the vomiting comes back and it had some blood in it. We stopped the med, he stopped eating and we end up on kitty chemo pills for what vet thought was cancer of some type. We were not taking aggressive measures to do surgery to confirm on a 22 year old cat. He just never recovered. Stopped eating about a week ago and as he kept drinking we kept hope. Last night he went downhill fast and today (luckily the wife was off work) he got worse. We waited for the kids to get off school and took him in to the vet for the last time. I will still say my wife and I are not cat people. But we were these two cats people. And we had 15 or 16 awesome years with them and they had an awesome home.
