So this is my understanding. Pilots use to hang there watch on a hook on the headboard of there bed. That extra loop was what they used to hang it with.

I personally cut off the extra loop and seal the cut with a flame. On some watches I keep the extra loop if there is to much room between the spring bars and watch case. The reason why is when removing the watch it can slide off the nylon strap is there is to much room.
