Daytona encounter on a Plane....
So... I'm on a cross country flight yesterday, JFK to LAX. I notice one of the (female) flight attendants is wearing a Daytona. I only got a couple glimpses but thought it was a SS and looked very new. When I had the chance to stretch my legs, I asked her: "Excuse me, but is that a Daytona you're wearing?" And pointed out mine at the same time. Her response... knocked me for a complete loop! Of course I was friendly and courteous on the outside but on the INSDIE I was shaking my head in disbelief. I don't know, maybe I'm over sensative... or letting stupid things bother me.... or maybe I'm just weird, but anyway, here is what happened:
She smiles (very nice and attractive young lady by the way) and looks at the watch, and says: "Yes.. well, at least I think that's what it is" She shows it to me and I almost hit the floor when I realized I was looking at a brand new WG Daytona with Meteroite dial. I was a tad speechless but said: "Thats a beautiful looking watch, have you had it long?" She replies: "I just got it as a Christmas present... really didn't know what it was, I just like big watches...is it really a Rolex? I complimented her on it again, thanked her for the time and returned to my seat... and did this to the back of the seat in front of me: It's none of my damm business, and with poverty, the economy, world hunger, pollution etc., there are more important things to occupy my thoughts, but I just couldn't comprehend how someone would have what to many of us is a grail, 35 thousand dollar watch and be so non-chalant (is that how you spell it?) about it. It's kind of like if you cherished Ferraris, and somone drove up in your dream car and you complimented them on it, and they respond "Oh is that a Ferrari?" That's a heck of a Christmas present, it's just incomprehensible to me how somone could receive such a significant item as a 35 K Rolex and not even realize what they had... (?). And before anyone asks, It was DEFINITELY REAL. I don't know... I guess I'm just weird but does anyone here understand what I'm talking about? |

You are not alone my friend. there are a lot of rolex owners that don't appreciate them as much as we do. chances are she didn't even work hard for it (just like what you said it's a gift) unlike most of us specially like me not gifted with the looks that can get a lot of freebies in life...

Maybe the lady is a TRF member and has been reading the threads on what to say when people ask "Is that real"

With the quality of fakes going around i would say you can't really tell if it was fake, you'd need to have a close look for the higher quality fakes.
If it was real, then you've got to query why someone would give her it as a present, unless she had a seriously rich partner or family, but then why would she be working in that type of job?

Could be a mistress that some very wealth guy or girl meet on a flight. As for the job other then dealing with people (I hate people) that would be a very cool job travel around stay different places see new places kinda like the military without getting shot at… However this whole (“is it really a Rolex”) encounter begs the question could she not read? |

i have to agree that it may not have been real...
i dont mean to be negative, and they are paid well, her husband (sig other, etc) could be very rich.. but to have a $35k BEAUTIFUL watch and act like taht.. either she has a GREAT sense of humor and she was messing with you, or its not real and she was fearful of you figuring her out.. either way, GREAT story... only people that have ever noticed my Rolex were salespeople at the AD hahahha. id love a stranger to ask about it, i love conversation!

It's hard to imagine she didn't know what it was. Perhaps she, as a poor defenseless flight attendant, just didn't want to admit to it being real to a big scary random airline passenger, in an enclosed space. |

I honestly believe that people just dont know what they have or what they bought. I encountered a friends' family member at a party once and I noticed he was wearing an Omega Seamaster Chronograph. So I finally said to him "hey I like that Seamaster you have there"...his response was "no, its an Omega". I said, "yea an Omega Seamaster" and he says "oh is that what its called?" I was really surprised that someone could spend that kind of money and not know exactly what they were buying. But not everybody is like us tho...

X2, Not a lot of people are freaks and care so much about their watches like we do, when I tell a lot of my friends how I take care of my watches they just look at me and laugh like I'm crazy or something.

My guess is she knew exactly what it was but was trying to downplay it by acting kind of clueless - maybe so her co-workers wouldn't overhear her brag about it, etc.

I'm inclined to agree. Every professionally occupied woman I know (and I understand you need a minimum of brains to be a flight attendant) has an exact idea of what her jewelry is worth. If it was real, I doubt she was going to acknowledge its value.

That was EXACTLY my thought... a young and beautiful flight attendant, possibly a Sugar Daddy in one of the ports of call... I don't want to judge anyone but that's the scenerio that went through my mind. I wonder if they are any older women that want a young-handsome stud as a boy toy? I wouldn't qualify... but it's nice to dream! |

Do not say that ! When you go to work in a 50 k car, (MBenz), its easy to wear a watch that costs as much, a diamond ring, a similar bracelet, a..., a....., a...... Some are not working in gold mines, but carry them around
If you are aware, some ladies hand bags go up to 2 k and shoes to 0,6 k. Namelly Gucci, Prada LV and the rest. Ask me !!!!

get this though, if she did give into an old rich man, and given that she seems to not know the worth of her watch (assuming its authentic in line with this theory), this 35K watch may just be one of many other gifts worth just the same if not more! Thats the real world, money talks and there are some pretty hot girls who are self proclaimed gold diggers out there. Just look at the porn business...

I don't see what the big deal is.
Someone gave it to her, and it's entirely likely that that someone didn't go chapter-and-verse into what it is and how much it costs. Is she obliged to hop onto Google and do her homework about it? Hardly so. What's to say that the same person could have given her a Timex and it wouldn't have meant as much to her? Storm in a teacup, guys.
