Quality pen recommendations

Looking to buy a good high end pen as a present. I dont know anything about pens. So thought i might as well ask on the forum? Ive heard of brands like montblanc but are they just a well known brand or are they actually very good.
Since this is a watch forum i am basically looking for the patek of pens lol

I own Mont Blanc and Waterman pens that I like very much.
No idea if these are “the best”, but they’re definitely pretty good.

Cartier makes some pens that would be good gifts. I own a Pasha pen that is very high quality. It is no longer made, though.

I suggest you write with a variety of pens and go with what feels comfortable both to hold and to write with. I don’t really care for the, “I don’t know anything about [item], just give me the most expensive [item] you’ve got” method of selection. Personally, I like Sailor pens.

I have a Monte Blanc Meisterstuck and have Bic handwriting. It sits in my briefcase and gets zero use.

I also have a Colibri rollerball from thirty years ago which I also really like.

I’m not a pen expert. Have several Mont Blancs.
One was a graduation gift from friends. It’s been my daily for almost 30 years!
I have about 5 MB’s!

If you had bothered to read my post you would of known the pen is a gift and not for me. So no need for me to try anything. I am simply looking for a nice gift for a friend who works in a office environment and has a milestone birthday coming up.
I don’t really care for people who reply to posts without reading the original post correctly

Hard to buy one as a gift and expect it will be used. Mont Blanc is a good bet for someone you don’t know well enough to say whether they would prefer fountain, ballpoint or rollerball. I personally like waterman, ST DuPont and Parker much more than Mont Blanc.

I have quite a few pens from the usual suspects above, I don't use them anymore (I think they are in a box somewhere under the stairs) but, for writing and pride of ownership I had a Nakaya Fountain Pen made for me, beautiful writer, I made the mistake of getting a broad nib though, if I had another chance I would go medium. It looks elegant without a clip but is more practical for someone who keeps it in their jacket with a clip.

Never leaves the house/ just use it at my desk. It’s a lovely writer & always a joy to use

A quite like the look of this one but don’t really want to go above £500. The person its for has a nice rolex steel gmt so was thinking a silver pen would go nicely.

You can not go wrong with Mont Blanc. A quality product and one that can be serviced very easily should the need arise.

I'm honestly not impressed with MB, I own a ballpoint (starwalker) and it's ok, I prefer my €15 Parker jotter as it writes more comfortable and feels like better quality...

I’ve had most of the MB and Cross lines at one time or another.

But a Waterman black resin ballpoint is my favorite. Different sizes but the hemisphere is a nice middling size for most hands/grips.

You’re absolutely right. I did read your post, but totally blanked out about the gift part. My apologies. Now, about the pens; Montblanc is not near the Patek of pens. However, if you don’t know anything about pens and the recipient doesn’t know anything about pens, then Montblanc is the way to go. That’s only because, like Rolex, they are the most recognizable even amongst those who know nothing about them. Regarding the silver one you posted...there’s something about the silver that Montblanc uses in their sterling pens that develops a slight yellow hue over time. I have half a dozen Montblanc and I think the best gift would be a ballpoint Meisterstuck Classique.

But if you're still fixated on a pen, I own MB, Cartier and Pelican. Pelican being my favorite. Are you thinking ball, roller or fountain ?

Lost a MB that was gifted to me after graduation. Have been using this Parker Jotter XL because I am not willing to lose my dad’s vintage MB and Parkers. $20 and they write just as well.

You can get different nibs for fountains or tips for rollers.

Otherwise as Dave said above Nakaya do make some amazing fountain pens. For something a bit less expensive look at Platinum pens also from Japan.

I have a good few MB’s and love them. My personal opinion is a ball point MB is just an expensive ball point pen.

For a gift go rollerball or fountain pen if budget allows.

What is the difference between a rollerball and ball point ? Had a quick google and it said one is thicker ink, i am guessing theres more to it than that ?

There may be, but to me that's a good description. I think the rollerball puts down more ink, which makes it feel smoother. I prefer them over ballpoint.

For me personally, I prefer fountain pens, but most people do not like the hassle and the mess. If your friend/coworker hasn't made a preference clear, then rollerball is probably a safer bet.

The advantage of Mont Blanc is that like Rolex, everyone has at least heard of it. It may not be the best pen, but as a gift it probably has the right cachet.
