No updated Sub at Basel 2020?
Been pondering this for a while, will they won’t they upgrade the movement in the submariner, or change the case slightly like we saw on the GMT, in 2003 on the 50th anniversary of the sub we saw the LV variant introduced.
The green anniversary theme continued with the new generation ceramic bezel sub, here’s my quandary, we are only 3 years away from the Sub’s 70th Birthday, will Rolex hold off until 2023 to overhaul the range and introduce a 70th anniversary edition, 3 years is not long when you consider the development process for a newer evolutionary model of the iconic Submariner Interested in anyone else’s thoughts on this ??? the fact that the price increase in 2020 includes the submariner line makes me think the sub wont be updated next year

No empirical proof one way or the other but, I like where you went with it. 70th will bring forth the updated version, I can see it.

Why update something they don't want to sell?

I too feel like they might hold out on it just a little bit longer. People are still lusting about the current Sub and there is still wait lists to get that. Why would they spend money on re-tooling etc. when this cash cow is still alive and well giving plenty of milk.

Why not wait for the 75th a bigger milestone IMO and in conjunction with the last. Although a Platinum Sub in conjunction with 70th does make sense!

I tend to think they’ll wait till the 70th, but with Rolex, who knows...

Or they will update in 2020 and then again for the 75th anniversary making for an eight year cycle to coincide with the traditional 25 year anniversary periods.

Rolex is moving up market. The entry level Pro piece will be skipped over again, if not discontinued completely.

What I heard from a guy on Hollywood Avenue was that all subs were being discontinued and only one replacement, a rose gold sub with a pink dial and a rainbow bezel was coming in Basel.

I don’t think this has any bearing - nearly all models were hit by price increase. If, for example, the sub date gets an updated movement in 2020 , then ref 116610 gets discontinued and ref 126610 is introduced with a new price. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Wondering what a company will do in the future sucks the joy out of this hobby, at least for me.

I know Rolex does not do SS with Oysterflex. So, the only hope is a PM. As long as there is Oysterflex, I don’t care, I’ll be in line

I can see the Oysterflex filtering down into the dive watches.
If it's such a great strap, I see no reason for it not to eventually show up on the dive watches of all metals. I never have understood the reasoning behind the Oysterflex Daytona. The truth is that no one knows what Rolex will do and Rolex logic is not always coherent to us mere mortals.

ss Sub on oysterflex makes perfect sense.
PM Daytona Oysterflex gave perfect opportunity for field testing the strap in a niche market, where any issues could be hidden with ‘no questions asked’ replacements ss oysterflex Sub would be next hot model - I’m tempted to call my local AD tomorrow, and put my name down so that I’m first in the queue should it appear at Basel |

What Re-tooling? They already have the dies from where they made the 116600. Only the thickness of the Mid-case material will be different and the dies will handle that easily with thinner material. The 32xx movements are the same diameter as the 31xx movements but a little thinner, so the tooling is the same only the machining depth changes. Other considerations around that are only a few mouse clicks away from where they are now |

Or they could simply slip the new movement in and not even change the reference number (or anything visible) just to mess with everyone. Somehow I like that (old skool) option the best.
