Which Vintage Sub Reference would you Hunt for up to $10K
Unless you are guided by a specific desire for a reference, I'm finding it very hard to decide or focus on a specific reference (casting aside the date or no date issue) in vintage up to $10,000 space. I realize that won't get you a prime example of a 5512 or 1680, but I would enjoy a nice matte dial over glossy). I'm also looking at the thought of a Tudor snowflake in blue. Curious what you might think is a good wear it and play with it Vintage Sub. I might go past the matte dial as I already have a 1675 with a killer dial and a Daytona 16520

I know you asked about a sub, but I have a Sea Dweller 16660 (triple “6”) that’s awesome. That creamy tritium and no date does the trick. Just a thought.

The 16800 with Matte dial or Tudor 79090 blue , should tick all your Boxes.

I’d look for a 5513 but I think that these days 10k won’t cut it.

Thats going to be tough finding a 4 dgt. Sub in decent shape, not saying it can't be done with patience but im thinking more like 12k. I kind of agree on a 16660 or a tritium dial Sub. For less than 10k you'd get a lot for your money. I was looking for a 4 dgt. Sub @ year ago but ended up with a '12 - 14060M. Happy Hunting...

I think you can get a nice example of a later 5513...but at that point you might as well get a 14060.

You may be able to find a four-digit sub, but it’s almost certainly going to have serious shortcomings at that price. If you’re willing to go to five digits (14060, 16800), with patience you will be able to find an honest, crisp, original example with tritium lume and likely box and papers within your budget. Hell, you may even have enough left over to get that full service that the seller will falsely claim he already performed.

There's still a lot of value in vintage Datejusts and sub-40 mm Tudors (both sport and dress types). Don't neglect these in your search. You'd be able to pick up two or three of these within your 10-grand budget, and trends do seem to be moving toward more gentlemanly sizes.
Good luck with it. |

A transitional 5513 would be a nice addition to your other two pieces for around that price point. A matte version in solid shape would cost quite a bit more.

Thank you for all the replies. I came across a really nice 5513 and once I saw it in person had to have it.

You got to be realistic about what you can get at that price and to be a good condition watch.
I would aim at a 5 digit ref. tritium dial piece.

5 digit for sure if 10k is the budget.
as others have said, I don't think you would be happy with the 5513 that 10k would get you. Condition is paramount |

you won't have a 5513 matte for 10k but maybe a 1680 or I'd go for a 4 lines 14060, sub, gmt and zenith is a killing combo imho

Would you like to share some details? It would be nice to since you asked for opinions. I am curious to know if it was within the budget and what it came with.

Hi, Sorry for the delay, crazy week. So I was able to remain within my budget and found a local opportunity through a respected seller. Watch is in excellent (of course a little polish, but not bad and a lot of meat on lugs) condition, dial and hands incredible and yes, a 1980's service insert and no bracelet. I have a nice Rivet from my 1675 which fits perfectly if I want the bracelet. Hold time very well although no service history and no box or papers. I am very happy with it. I'll ultimately get a MK3 insert, but I'm in no rush since it's really nice as is. I did believe I would have to do a 16800 but moved fast on a nice opportunity. Regards, Darius
ROM, not sure how to take your hmm, always fun to advise newbies on new purchases, but .... so you bought this ' thing ' no bracelet, service insert, any papers?. What is "thing" referring to. Also, I'm hardly a newbie, since when does asking fellow members make you a newbie, check my IG page for more on me - chronosandkatanas, Thanks |
