Is there a new Explorer II coming out?
Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum so apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere.
I'm saving up for my first Rolex and keep changing my mind between the GMT IIc, Yacht Master, or Explorer II. There's elements of all of them that I like and my prioritisation of them changes almost daily. I've read that the newer Explorer II has the better mechanism (parachrome?) than the old one but is there going to be an update to the model this year? If so, what changes do you think this would entail? Ta very muchly. Chicken |

Most of the rumours about a new model to be unveiled at Basel later this month are focused on the Submariner (ceramic bezel, updated bracelet, larger size) and not the Exp 2.
Still, I for one would like to see the Exp 2 updated and revamped; also, after last year's Deepsea (shockingly large and thick), I think anything's possible. PS Welcome aboard! |

Hi and welcome...
The Exp II has the 3186 movement (with Parachrom hairspring) as also found in the GMT IIc If & when the Exp II is changed, it will keep the same movement regardless of what else Rolex do to it (which will of course entail a hefty price hike) Good luck Cheers

Welcome! Everybody is right, the Sub seems to be the next candidate. They generally do one at a time, so its turn will come! When that happens, just as it did with all the other models, you can rest assured with the updates to the model comes a big update to its price!

My only wish would be to update the bezel. It's been about 20 years since any cosmetic explorer I update and probably even longer for explorer ii.

Although it's been expected for the past few years, no-one will know for certain whether the Explorer and Explorer II will be updated until 26 March. If there are updates, my money would be on the GMT IIc-style bracelet (possibly with PCLs), maxi dial and hands, and, as arkwhaler said, some kind of update to the bezel on the Explorer II. As much as I love it, I'm not sure we'll be seeing the Glidelock on the Explorers.

Thanks all. If the Explorer II came with a maxi dial and hands then I think my decision would be made for me.

My guess that if /when the the Explorer II gets an update, it will be a GMT IIc clone with a SS bezel.
To be honest, the only updates I would like to see on the Explorer II are solid centre links & an updated clasp. |

The Exp II is pretty much spot on as it is. However, I can see the attraction of the GMT IIc clasp, with its EasyLink extension. That said, I've never felt the need to adjust a bracelet 'on the fly' and the Fliplock is very 'fixable' i.e. not a complex, expensive device. Pros & cons...
Hollow centre links are there for a reason, on tool watches, to keep dirt and grit (esp water-bourne) from grinding between links. Cheers

i like the overall design of expii. i just think the font needs to be updated on the bezel. i guess a new clasp would be nice as well.
pcl on explorer? i would hate that. hope it doesn't happen. lume on 3-6-9 would be nice though. |

From a local AD where I had a bluesy in one hand and a TT GMTIIc in the other the manager , who is a big sub fan with a good collection , told me the sub was going up to GMTIIc size this year.

I've got mine on today, and while I WOULD like to have solid center links and a newer style clasp, the Explorer II, AS IS, is near perfection to me!
And the longer I'm around, the more I am inclined to eventaully get a 16170 or earlier, rather than a 116710. So I'm guessing I would not prefer a "116570" over my current Explorer II.

Yep. Sorry all . Nipped away for a long time!
The TT GMTIIc is a lot bigger case than the sub. You can see the difference rather than measure it to check. The TT GMT IIc was also a lot heavier. Mind you there was a heck of a bracelet on it! Si |

I could see them doing supercase and maxi-dial, along with the 3186, and also the upgraded clasp and bracelet. It will probably be a nice looking watch and a strong candidate for my next.
