I bought 2 brand new rolexes back in 2011:

submariner
gmt master ii

I wore the Sub daily for one year. Then bought GMT, but never wore it.

Then i never wore them again, been sitting in their original boxes for the last 8 years. Because i changed job, so didn't want wear rolex to work.

do i still need to send them in for regular maintenance?

Imo if you don't plan to wear them right now then don't service them. Not a bad idea to service a watch that has been sitting for 10 years if you plan to start wearing it regularly again. I think the oils could break down a bit after that long but I could be wrong. Someone feel free to correct me.

they do. i check twice a year and when i pick them up and give them a shake, they start clocking.

Should always wind up a watch 40 crown turns once a month even if never worn.

Your kid might appreciate it more knowing that it was the watch that his dad wore every day and loved, rather than it sat in a box in a drawer until you died.

Oh come on, there are more than enough pieces available for those wanting to wear

OP, if you appreciate your pieces in the box rather than on your wrist, enjoy your collection however you want to My opinion on servicing is if it runs, you should be fine. If you want to take it into the water, a pressure test is recommended to make sure the gaskets don't need replacing.

If you haven't used them for 8 years the lubricants may have dried out, which leads to inaccuracies and possibly damage. I'd have them serviced just to be on the safe side but that's more if you're planning on wearing them regularly.

P.S be prepared to get a slap at the AD for not wearing high demand models for 8 years

They're basically new, modern ones with modern oils. I wouldn't bother doing anything to them except wind and wear for a day once in a while.

If your watch is running when you finally get it out of its box then why would it need servicing? Ok it might not be keeping time but if it is the I’d leave it.

My 2c would be that you wear them regularly, time the watches and check for accuracy. I’ve had watches I wore once a year, and a dozen years later they kept good time and didn’t cry for a service.

There’s no foul in keeping a watch in the box for 11 years or 22 years. Your watch; your rules.

thats what i thought. they are practically new oils. oils only break down if there is heat and mechanical movement involved. I plan to wear regularly again in the future, but based on feedbacks, i think gonna leave them as is till then.

if i had the self control as OP does to let them sit for awhile it might quell the neverending pursuit of the next big thrill.

I recently wore a Gshock for a couple weeks on a vacation where i knew there was a strong chance of taking some hard spills mountain biking and hiking and i had genuine feelings of desire and excitement to wear watches that i generally consider as trade bait on a day to day basis when back in the city and on the prowl for next big thing.

wear them if you like or continue to store them for a rainy day, they are little treasures and im sure you enjoy just opening the box to admire them..i wouldnt send them out to be serviced at this time

If you get pleasure out of just seeing your watches in a box or knowing they are in a safe, do it!

If you get pleasure from spending $1,000 to service something you've never used, do it!

Especially if you never wind it or have it running, I can't imagine getting it serviced just to sit in the box is going to do anything meaningful.
