Trade-in value
Anyone here ever trade their Rolex for another Rolex on AD?
What is the ball park percent for a trade? Example: SS/Plat YM "K" series in very good condition trading for a brand new GMT IIc. |

Probably better off selling it on your own. But that is just a guess I have never traded one in for another.

trading a watch is much like trading a car; you'll always get more if you sell it privately. The AD (or whoever you're trading the watch to) is going to turn around and sell it for a profit. Most probably, they're going to recondition the watch, to restore it to sellable condition. This all adds to the cost of owning that watch, so most likely you're going to get a low value for your watch (or at least not what you're expecting). You're probably wondering what I think the trade in value of that 16622 you own is ...
If I still worked for the big "T", I'd tell you the first number would be a 2...probably mid 2000 range or so. They might show you more for the watch, but that's because they're taking 20% off the top of the new watch and adding it to the trade value of the old one. |

Here's a first hand example. I took an "R" serial tt Sub Blue dial and a stainless Datejust ( I believe it was an '86 model but I cant remember) which was in mint and I mean mint condition and was just talking it over with the store manager while my girlfriend was picking out David Yurman crap. Anyway, I was looking at a tt Yachtmaster and the MSRP was $10k+ and I told the guy I didnt need anymore watches at the time and he told me to bring in 1 or 2 I may be interested in trading. So I did, my t/t Sub and stainless Datejust. I had no clue what he would offer but thought it would at least be decent since he gave me a 25 minute speech on how great Rolex held it's value. Anyway, he took the watches to the back, spent about 20 minutes back there and came back out, and offer $3k on trade for both watches. So it came out to being $7.25k+ tax my Sub and my Datejust; which of course I didnt do. I was literally offended when he made that offer and picked up my watches and walked out. So when you do go to offer a trade, let them know you know what you are talking about

If you don't have to sell due to putting food on the table or loosing your house then now is not the time to sell!
When the economy is good you will get top dollar......if you have a privte sell.

The OP could try that route, or in the alternative, why not find someone who is willing to trade a mint GMT IIc, and the difference between the two will be in the $500-700 range at most...maybe less.

Local AD won't even consider a used watch. Their happy to sell you a new Rolex but want nothing to do with your old one. F'ed up I think.

I have had better luck selling them outright. My AD gives almost nothing for used watches.

Tourneau where I got my new Sub last week has a policy where they give you what you paid on trade in when you purchase a more expensive piece. Only applies to watches purchased from them.
I got my Sub ND COSC with 10% of list price. |

much better than mine. My AD is Bromberg's in Alabama, and although I havent bought much from them my family has bought Rolex's, diamonds, Yurman and other things from there. I dont consider myself a watch a dealer but when I buy I have flipping them in the back of my mind so I obviously cant pay MSRP. However I thought if I could trade the two I had and maybe a grand or two Id go ahead and do it. When he came back with $7.25k+tax plus my Sub and Datejust I was offended. I just sent a family member to another AD to buy his new Daytona he paid cash for, so they missed out on that sale

Thanks guys! |

I think a lot depends on the watch you are trading in, the condition, desirability and the watch you are looking to buy. If there offering a discount on the new watch don't expect as much of a generous allowance.
At the end of the day, they are in business to make money In the end, you could probably do better selling privately but that's also easier said then done and has some risk. |

Sell it outright and then go in with the cash!
The AD's have to make a profit on both sides of any transaction. Good for them. Very bad for you!

I would have to agree with postiff... you will probably make more $$ selling it to someone rather than trading it in, although it does make things allot easier

Here's my story about a part exch attempt at a dealer.
I've got a 14060m COSC and I want an Alaska Project. Dealer offers me £1200 for the 14060m and nothing off the Omega - £1770 cost to change. I sell my 14060m privately for £2500 and buy the Omega online for £2370 - Minus £130 cost to change.

when I bought my new watch last Friday the dealer offered me $2450 for my P series yachtmaster. (I laughed) I figure I can do better than that selling it myself or just keeping it.
