Stopped by one of my favorite jewelers to window shop the other day. Was looking at all the big boys and the salesman I was dealing with was brilliant. One of the most knowledgeable watch guys I’ve met in ages, great personality, and Learned my tastes very quickly and made a suggestion I normally would’ve overlooked. Now I’m thinking about adding an 18kt Ulysse Nardin San Marco to my collection for less that a new steel oyster perpetual. Plenty oh deals to be had on beautiful watches. J just might not be a Rolex



Heavily modified ETA was the only reason I didn’t pull the trigger but for $6k how wrong could I really go for a 40mm solid gold watch

I've never been one to worry about being cool or doing what's cool. I just do me; if people like it/me awesome, if not, ok. As far as watch collecting being cool or not, I think many base the perceived notion of the "whole" from the small sample taken from TRF. I will definitely admit the daily threads of what's a good investment grate my nerves!

The watch market for "hyped" pieces at this time is similar to the art market, vintage car and super car market. In that people are looking at it as investments or to make a quick buck. While the percentage of people wearing luxury watches might be the same or less there are more people on the planet than ever.

I started collecting when I just turn 18 in late 2007. For 7 years, I was pretty active and I absolutely love / had fun with the hobby. To make a long story short, I sold out and quit collecting watch in 2014. I completely distance myself away from the hobby for 5 years, it was nice and I save a lot of money haha.

Really out of nowhere, I was bitten by the watch bug again. To my dismay, I walked into the super harsh reality. Unfortunately, we are living in a hype world now. Basically anything collectible with demand is being scalp / backdoor dealing / etc.

Look at Bourbon, Sport Cards, and even my other side hobby, Pokemon cards lol. And I hate to admit it, I'll probably fuel into this bull shit too. Because right now I'm currently saving up for a Pepsi BLRO (grey market price...)

We have to Adapt, be subject to the hype or find appreciation in the options that are not on the radar of the masses.

It would be nice if there was a resource for collectors at point of sale with a real option to purchase. Maybe someday things will shift again but for now it is a cash grab and that part is uncool...that is also business.

Thankfully we have made some friends we can share our passion with both here and locally.
Folks who remember collecting when it was about the watches.

I’m gradually going off Rolex as a brand I think. They seem so common now and so hyped that when I see someone wearing one my immediate reaction is someone with limited imagination. I recently caught myself thinking this subconsciously, looked down at my wrist (submariner) and laughed to, and at, myself!

I wouldn't say that it's uncool, but it certainly has lost most of its charm. When I started, I could buy a very nice used Sub for $4K, now it's more than twice that.

I've always been a geek on certain collectibles...started at age 10 with comic books.

When the hype builds is where I get all bent out of shape.
And that's a personal issue I have with hyped collectibles.

Interesting thought. It’s not really popular with most of my friends so for me it is still a cool hobby, which i share only with one or two friends.

Generally speaking i don’t consider the Internet to be real (this forum aside obviously!!) so the popularity of the masses is irrelevant to me.
