Best and Worst Purchases of 2020? (min $100)

It's been a long year. Like many others I have turned to retail therapy more than I like to admit. Found some winners and some duds.

What's been your best and worst purchase of 2020? I was going to suggest minimum $100 to keep the thread interesting but I suppose any price point works here. Let's hear it.

Best: A top specs PC computer with Microsoft's new flight simulator (I am a grown man and not really into "gaming" but this flying simulator has brought me hours of fun and having a top of the line fast PC has been more useful than I thought, plan to upgrade more often in the future).

Worst: Bought some fine art from a gallery without seeing the paintings in person. I am an art collector and want to support artists. The photos looked great online but once I got them delivered the paintings just didnt speak to me in the same way. Lesson learned. Buy art in person.

(Edit for those who haven't seen it this is what Microsoft's flight simulator looks like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y742QnTHWNQ. I also bought the joystick and peddles so play it with. Tempted to get a real pilot's license now.)

I will suggest a paired Netgear Orbi wireless router with satellite as my best purchase. Now have at least 200MB download speeds and 40MB upload speeds throughout entire home--a good part of the yard as well. Solid product. Have gotten up to 700MB download on my iMac.

Best and Worst Purchases of 2020? (min $100)

I’ve been doing the same.

Best is without question the trek rail 7 e mountain bike I bought in like April. It really kept me sane in the beginning.

Worst: hmm

I was killing time at Barnes and noble and bought my toddler son a stuffed cat n the hat doll for an absurd 28 dollars. It was so well made and we had been reading the book all week I couldn’t resist. I imagined him sleeping next to it and it becoming his favorite toy.

5 mins after I returned home my 8 month old boxer took it off the counter and shredded it. Lol

Edit: crap just saw over 100

That would change my answer for worst to the Tudor Pepsi I guess. It just didn’t get wrist time and cost me a grand.

Best is tough. I bought a lot of things that continue to make me happy. Gotta nominate my Niche Zero coffee grinder though. Making delicious home espresso everyday is nice.

Worst... bought an old Wilson Pro Staff 85 tennis racquet that Edberg, Sampras and (early on) Federer used, and couldn’t play well with it. It’s just a sporty ornament.

Thanks for adding to the thread. I am actually shopping for a new coffee grinder (been doing it manually all these years) and just googled the niche zero. Website says all sold out! I’ll keep looking tho.

I remember that tennis racquet. Racquet tech has come a long way. Wilson still makes good requests. I like the Wilson blade.

The Niche Zero was sold out when I ordered it too, but I think I only had to wait about three weeks before it came into the local shop I got it through.

I actually considered the Blade recently! Ended up getting a couple of the new Babolat Pure Drives, and love them (was already an Aero Pro Drive user). So true that racquets have come a long way!

best: This sounds dumb but I needed new tires for my car and on black friday I got a deal buy two tires get two free. I wish I could say I got the Patek I really want but still saving for it.

worst: Well proabably going to starbucks everyday for the past two months i’m sure i’ll we’ll over $100 in total. I love starbucks but it adds up paying $5-6 for some of the drinks i get there

Best purchase would be either my 16613 blue or my brand new 70” Samsung ultra 4K hd tv for $580 out the door.

I don’t know what would be worst. I am currently the high bidder on a seiko that may well be counterfeit so that may be the winner but it’s only $150 so not a big deal in the long run.

Bought it last year and I was losing when I decided to purchase more to make my price/share low, to breakeven at a lower price.

It was an amateur move on my part.

Not a total amateur mistake. I have been working in finance over a decade and have colleagues who still make such a mistake regularly. Happens.

Best purchase of 2020 had to be our backyard pool and kitchen. Finished the week before CA went on covid lockdown. The family has enjoyed it everyday and even allowed us to host thanksgiving and hopefully Christmas outdoors and households could stay socially distant if they wanted.

Worst purchase was renewing my office lease in January of this year. Have seen the office since March.

Before

After

Hey neighbor!

Your backyard looks great. Very nicely done. I think home renovations that encourage/facilitate the family (and extended family and friends) spending time together is one of the best things to spend money on. Worth every penny (and often helps resale value too so it might not even be an expense in the long run). Cheers and happy holidays.

Best would be all my golf stuff probably a fair bit over 10k already after just a few months. Took up the sport after the first lockdown in UK and im hooked. Im 39 and been retired for the past 10 years so always struggled to find things to take up my time and now ive found it. Play 5 full rounds a week mon/fri and have 3 lessons a week so really putting the time in.

Worst would be bought my wife a new Porsche, she asked for a small sports car and now doesn’t like it . Says its too small and low down lol so not sure if ill need to trade it in and take a big loss or convince her to keep it a while longer,

Sort of. Still have one company going but i take nothing to do with it now and its been that way the past 10 years. So i do still have an income but i see myself as retired because i have nothing to do. Loved it before my son started school but struggled the past two years since hes started school but think ive finally found the greatest pass time ever.

You would make quick friends here in Los Angeles. Golf courses full of younger guys your age, retired athletes and actors, always looking for mates to fill a foursome during the week.

Sounds great. All my golf mates in uk are all well into there 60s and 70s lol few of my life long friends play but they all work full time so makes it hard getting a game as im too busy with the kids at weekends. Got my 6 year old son playing now hes had a few lessons and we go to the driving range at weekends.
