newbie needs help!!!

I am about to pull the trigger... problem is, I'm having sleepless nights because i can't decide which SS sport rolex will have the distinction of being "my first".
The SS sub date and white explorer II (both are M series) kept smiling at me while I was handling them at the AD.
I would get them both at the same time if I had the cash to spare.
I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts regarding my dilemma.
Thanks!

Hi Migboy. If you would only have one, then i suggest you get a SS Sub. Its the ultimate Rolex. I had the Expy 2 black dial before but flipped it for a Sub.

I have to go the other way here- while I wore a Sub for 16 years, the white dial Expy2 is one of my favorite watches. For me it has both a uniqueness and the classic look of a Rolex at the same time. Now, if the choice was between a Expy2 and a 1680 Sub, it would be a different story.

either way the future is bright!

Given those 2 choices I'd go with the SS SD, but if you like the features of both the SD and Explorer II, go for the GMT IIc!

Damn GMT Guys...

Given ONLY those two choice i woudl go with the Sub Date

But if you are open for suggestions I would say check out the GMT Master II Ceramic 116710 or the GMT Master II 16710 Pepsi.

I like all Rolex but there are a LOT of Subs on the street if you want a great watch and have a different look go with the 16710.

Are you a diver, an explorer or a pilot..?
Just decide who you really are... and buy right.

If you are a ladies-Man...then buy a Cartier Tank Francaise...

You will never go wrong with a Sub date. I wish my first Rolex is a Sub Date but the SD is keeping me really really happy. GOodluck

True that the Sub has a little better resale, which is why you should haggle like heck on the Explorer-II, or pick one up slightly used.

I vote for the Explorer-II. I have both, and I prefer my Explorer-II hands down. Wears much more comfortably, I think the bezel on the Sub is too much sometimes for various dress situations, and I use the 24-hour hand and hour-jump feature on the Explorer frequently.

And, you just pointed out a great aspect of the Explorer-II: you can get it much cheaper than a sub, if you look around a bit.

As for water resistance, if you're going below 100m, then you're likely...well...I seriously doubt you'll be spending too much time below 100m.

Mabuhay! If you plan to travel a lot or your work relies on military time, I'd say go with the explorer. The sub date though is the true iconic watch. Don't worry about resale, you're probably not going to sell your first Rolex.

I chose the sub for my first purchase and never looked back. Got the Explorer later. For pure Comfort though, the ExplorerII gets my vote

Migboy - I can appreciate your dilemma since I'm pondering my first Rolex as well. I would personally go for the Sub - it's a classic and you just can't go wrong. And if I may offer some advice - with all due respect - get what YOU want and try not to let the wife influence you too much. Unless, of course, she's buying! Good luck!!!

Similar decision...

I am also deciding between the Explorer II (black dial) and the Sub Date. Here are a few points I have thought about (in no particular order);

You should be able to get the Exp II at least 20% cheaper than the Sub although their list prices are very similar. Purely because the Exp. II is not as popular.

If you are planning on selling the watch in the future, the Sub will hold its value better although this could be offset by buying the Exp II at a discount.

The Sub seems a common watch; the Exp II is slightly different which could make it more appealing to you.

The Sub let's everybody know you have a Rolex the Exp II is much more discrete.

Functionality - do you require the rotating bezel or is a 24hr hand more useful?

I believe the Exp II is more comfortable than the Sub, but I can't back this up.

I still can't make up my mind - only one way...keep trying both of them on until you think I can wear this watch for the next 10+ years.

Hope this helps

now we're seeing the big picture!

this is really my plan...

I'm becoming more inclined to getting the sub date "BNIB"... then later on get the white exp2 "pre-owned" at a much lower price than brand new.

thanks guys!

I never buy anything based on assumed resale value. Buy it because you love it. Resale is so iffy. Think about used cars and the trade in or sale values. True Rolex is not a used car but any item unless it is truly unique and or highly desireable , at the time you sell it, loses value.

You have to pick which makes you smile the most. Both are great watches but you can't go wrong with a Sub. Best of luck on your decision and keep us posted.
