Rolex and Homage
Just curious to know besides having a collection of rolexes. Anyone started to look into brands like Steinhart, Squale, Ginault and includes them in your collection? Do you get rid of it after having it or still keep them?

I have an Aquacy 1769 sub ...homage and similar size to the older 90's non beefed up case, thick lugged current Rolex sub, complete with sapphire, ceramic, solid bracelet, etc etc which I purchased for about $200 USD on ebay it's awesome, it fits me better and I keep it as a daily beat about wearer...which reminds me what the Rolex sub used to be. I wish Rolex would go back a release an older size and style cased sub like they used to be, but with a sapphire and ceramic bezel.. :)

I had Squale, Sinn and an Omega, (no homage) enjoyed them for a while but since adding Tudor, Rolex and a VC they just sat so I moved them on. I do have a couple Seikos and Orients that I don't wear much but may take on vacations. One Orient is on a strap so thats my one formal looking dress watch.

I recently picked up a Steinhart Ocean One 39mm. I think it's a great watch, very happy with it! I'm impressed with the quality, particularly at $425. While I also own 3 Rolex watches, I have no issues with homage. Buy what you like, and like what you buy!

I got this one. Never thought I'd buy something like that but for 1k I thought what the hell. Changed the seconds hand and had it serviced and it runs -0.5 sec/day. There's no similar offering from Rolex, I mean, no date, no-holes 5 digit case, solid end link, maxi dial, sword hands, domed sapphire, solid bracelet with glidelock clasp, so it's an interesting watch. It was a souvenir from a NY trip last year, and after all the controversy about the company and the owner it became more interesting to me lol. Wish I wore it more, though. It's been sitting in the box since then but I don't regret.

Steinhart uses the ETA 2824-2 elabore movement which is a tough caliber used by
many quality watches. Their homage references are aimed at past Rolex issues, which harms no one. The Explorer 39 is close to the rare Rolex 5513 gilt Explorer dial Submariner-rare even when they were made. Mine has the domed crystal worn with a gray-black Nato. Tough-but a classic suitable for salt water use. Better to lose this one than my 1680 red in a back street tavern....... Tudor also uses ETA calibers. So-a rugged quality watch at a fraction of the cost . |

Like others have said, the main advantage I see is being able to wear them in tough places without worry.

Recently I picked up a Steinhart OVR after having few Rolexes and Tudor and was pretty amazed for its quality at the price. Wear comfortably as the case follows the pre ceramic rolex style.

There are 2 things that I don't like about Steinhart.
1. The shape of their case. 2. The cyclops is not a true 2.5 magnification. The Squale 1545 has a better shaped case more like a Submariner & their cyclops is a true 2.5 magnification.

Out of the homage style, squale has the pedigree and make very nice watches. They made super cases for a few major brands including blancplain. Very nice watch. Ginault was a replica manufacturer. Then started making there own watches, the movement is even an eta replica thats polished up.

Zero love for homages on here......but I buy what I like.
This is discontinued and much harder to obtain than a sub. |
