The reason for my original hesitation with purchasing the watch was that I didn’t expect the Daytona to be presented (thought it may be something else) as the SA previously told me it was a “surprise” and I was taken aback when I saw it. I obviously understand the magnitude of the gesture and what I had sitting in front of me but was fully intending on passing on whatever was presented, I just went in out of curiosity and enjoy talking watches with my SA.

The dollar amount of the watch / access to disposable cash wasn’t the issue, however, I didn’t want there to be any contention with the new bride over spending yet another 14k on a materialistic item. As mentioned previously, this was an extremely busy year for us and I had already purchased 2 other Rolexes for myself along with her rings and as many have pointed out, it is “just another watch” after all.

The wife and I make all big ticket financial decisions together so I went home that night and had a conversation with her explaining the situation and what I had passed on, thinking it was the responsible thing to do. I told her I would reconsider the purchase the next go around. She was encouraging and said I should go ahead and purchase the watch before life for us really started to get crazy and priorities change (kids etc) where funds may need to be allocated elsewhere. Amazing woman, I know!

Now for those questioning the “now ruined”relationship with the SA after I declined to purchase ...I contacted him late that evening (well after closing), asked him if it was still available and he said it was still mine.

Went in two days later to collect and glad I did, it really is a thing of beauty.

I guess life has a funny way of working out sometimes....

Good for you, congrats on the purchase! Tough to pass on for sure but the 10k you can make flipping it (before you decided to buy) is not worth the future watches you will he offered. Now, you can probably get whatever you want.

Congrats, glad this worked out in the best way for you! Looks like a perfect fit. And I know I’m in the minority, but in person black dial > white dial.

OOOOOF! Bad move. However, my opinion means nothing. You had a good reason for a pass.

Read the story. He called back at his wife's suggestion and bagged it.

Glad you made the decision to get it and that it was still available! It's a great watch, my favorite of everything I've owned so far. Congrats!

Good move OP. Your SA is a keeper! If this was your grail, and you had the funds, it really was a no brainer. Maybe you just needed reassurance (nicer way of saying "approval") from your wife so that you will never feel guilty about 3 Rolex purchases in one year. I would have done the same thing. Looks great on your wrist and that black dial is damn sexy.

13k is still a lot of money if you’re not ready and flipping it for a profit would only ruin your relationship with the AD if they find out (and they could). So I would say it was a good move!
