Sure they're tool watches and that's what they're for. They can take a beating and everything - and yes scratches do give character - and then you can just service them and have them look like new again.

However, scratches don't look very good and too much "character" on your watch can ruin the look of it, if you know what I mean... so it doesn't hurt to be a little cautious. That way you don't have a crappy-looking scratched up watch that you have to look at all the time. That's just my honest opinion and the way I think; if scratches don't bother you one bit though, then I guess it doesn't matter

No the scratches do not bother me. I knew this would happen as I tend to stick to one watch for years. But as you can see in my other posts ( http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=73471 ) the Crystal and Ceramic still look as good as new. If this had been the old style bezel insert I am sure it would have scratches. So for those skeptical about the ceramic do not be. I have not dropped the watch yet nor do I plan too I think this would result in some damage to the ceramic and crystal.

I think for now I am going to wear it, enjoy it and loose any sleep over it. If the watch cannot take it then this is the wrong watch for me.

Reminds me of one of the first TRFers to get a GMT-IIc... he had an excuse for the abuse (maybe you do too), he is/was special forces and I think he worked for a "Blackwater-type" company in some rather bad places.



May I ask what brought about this level of damage?


I have many daily beaters that I don't even attempt to baby, and they don't look anything like your watch - not even after years of good use.

Danny, good on you I have worn my GMT II (c) since the day I got it. (3 months ago) Yes it has some scratches, not as much as you, and it still looks real sharp. People pay out on the polished center, but I love it. The scratches can't be seen unless you look real close, or take excellent close photos like you have Danny. To conclude after giving my GMT no special attention (wearing wise) it still looks exceptionally good. I would say much better than any other watch I have owned after a similar time. The crystal and the bezel still look brand new, not a scratch on them. I note your watch has some bracelet scratches but the watch itself looks as new. Well done wear it as it should be worn!

A few months ago I finished one of my pet projects in which I high polished almost everything on my SS Tissot watch (don't ask me why). I wear it half the time and it's my beater. I don't baby it at all, and the SS is 316L, not 904L. Today, it still looks pretty good - there are some scratches, but definitely not like yours. Check out my pics. wow... mine has like 3 scratches on the clasp only after 2 months..

i wear it every day, but i guess i work in an office and all and i just dont wear it when working on cars and all, i have a Seiko Monster beater for that, that watch is FUCKED haha, well not really... but compared to the Rolex.. it is

anyways, congrats on wearing it! screw thinking these are museum pieces.. a few minutes of work would buff those all out if you wanted anyways!

No good special oops stories sorry. I just cannot bring myself to take it off. I wear it for everything I do except Jack hammering and sledging out concrete. Other than that it does what I do. I skate a few times a week with my son, snowboard every other weekend, it has been through three or four small remodel projects around the house, almost 1000 photos, and my daily digitizer sessions, my digitizer board does not have the smoothest finish although not like sand paper I once used it to brush out some other polished links on another watch as well. The deep scratches on the clasp not sure? I was just on the roof of a 10 story building (Bob Hope Patriotic Hall) in LA yesterday, crawled around looked at an old ass riveted steel tank on the roof and walked around on the cat walks above the 300 seat auditorium which was extremely cool to do. Not many people get to walk “behind the scenes” in an 82 year historical building. I cruise the new construction sites and I am no typical pansy ass office guy afraid to work hand and hand with my guys. We are currently working on the new Motor Transport Division for the LAPD and that had some pretty cool stuff going in the ground that I did not want to miss out on. I will be out on site working at the LA Zoo Pachyderm Exhibit once we break ground. I Just finished the re-design of the elephant drinking fountains. Once we fab them up and install them I will post some pictures of what an elephant drinker looks like.

Sorry to all those who cringe at the site of a well loved Rolex but this one is mine and she will be with me for the rest of my life. I think it was Ian from Minor Threat that once said “it’s my life I’m gonna live my way” Hey I still give her a weekly bath and I do not intentionally scratch her it just does not really bother me all that much when she does get scratched.

Nope nothing like that... Picture 10” steel pipe 1 cut at a 45 degree angle on both sides and a second piece cut straight. The straight one will have a 15” tall by 10” wide Ellipse plasma cut into it. One side of the 45 degree cut pipe will be welded to that. After which we will weld a bottom flange with a cleanout to the bottom, weld some legs to it and fill it with a float operated valve kind like what is used in a toilet. After everything is fabed up we will send it our for galvanizing and then have the interior epoxy coated. There is way more to it than that I had to draw 8 pages worth of stuff for it.

when i got my watch, because i was careful, somehow psychologically i was bumping my watch to things nobody else would!! i got few scratches. but yours are far more. i like to know what you do for living??? are you a handy man???
another problem i found with rolex is if the brushed link on the bracelet is at the same level not prominent, with other links it would get less scratches. dont knw why they made it that way!

My wife remarked at dinner tonight how the band on my TT Blue Sub looked "relaxed" which basically meant stretched. It put a smile on my face because I've worn it almost every day for 6 years with no service or polishing. You have a watch with character, and I'd take it over a safe queen anyday!

Too often I, and most we know, get caught up in the "Rolex" mystique, and we forget to truly "wear" our watches without unrealistic apprehension.

Wear the damn thing and enjoy it. Life is too short to worry about "investment," "resale value," etc. as it relates to a mass-produced Rolex watch.

ALMOST NO ROLEX--not produced in this day and age--WILL EVERY MAKE YOU RICH OR ALTER YOUR REALITY.

Im SO glad to see that I am not the only one who USES their watch. I have never been able to understand those who practically faint at the slightest "desk diving" scratch. Or those who rush to have their bracelet re-brushed every six months.
My watches have been worn through hurricane rescue missions, the war in Iraq, exercises in Afghanistan, 2 marriages, 2 divorces and several racing schools and they look just like yours.
