DJ41 Buyer's Remorse - Flip into a Sub?
So I got a DJ41 with a rhodium dial and oyster bracelet. It's by far the nicest watch I've ever owned, as my most expensive watch other than this is an Apple Watch. But I've had the watch less than a week and already have some buyer's remorse. Here is my experience with the DJ41:
1. The quality of the build is very high and it is within one second per day. 2. The sunburst dial and shiny surfaces are a lot flashier than I really feel comfortable with. I am not a showy person and want something that obviously looks luxurious but maybe doesn't bling so much. 3. I wish it had a rotating bezel to time things. 4. I love the cyclops. Date is very useful for me. 5. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable wearing it at work. 6. I don't think the rhodium dial lends itself well to being a good casual watch since it looks quite flashy. I think I'd prefer a non-sunburst dial. 7. I'm not a fan of PCLs. Not because of the scratches or anything. Just because it looks a bit too blingy. 8. When I look down at the watch, I don't see myself wearing it everywhere, doing anything and loving it deeply. When you know, you know... And this just is not the one. 9. It's not a Sub, and I've realized I can't rationalize my way out of that being the watch I love. The watch was a gift from my wife celebrating a major milestone and she loves the watch, but ultimately it wasn't a blind gift and was something we discussed (a lot) and decided on, so she knows about buyer's remorse and that it isn't my first choice of watch but something we could get at the AD. I feel guilty for not fully appreciating the gift from my wife but ultimately it does not feel like "the one". In my heart of hearts I know it is a black on black Submariner - really any of them. The 16610, the 116610LN (probably my favourite) or the new 126610LN would all do for me. So the question becomes this - what can I do from here? My wife told me to keep it for a year and wear it, and if I still feel the same then I can sell it (maybe lose $1k or whatever) and get a Sub and it can still be an heirloom piece to celebrate the milestone this DJ was meant to celebrate. My question is, how to best go about this? I have the box, papers, warranty, and bought the watch from the AD. Am I best swapping this for a Sub through a grey market dealer? Am I better off separately selling it for cash then subsequently buying a Sub? What is the best way to go about this? Where do I even start? I paid (including taxes) CAD$10,250 or so for the watch and it is showing on Chrono24 for over CAD$12,000 pre-owned. So I'm not particularly concerned about losing my money (and money is not the big issue here). My concern is I don't want to do anything stupid but I want to get the watch I'm most interested in without doing anything stupid or unnecessarily losing money. Used Subs appear to be going for about CAD$17,000, or maybe CAD$13,000 pre-ceramic. I could afford to spend whatever the additional amount is needed for a Sub, although I am also considering the pre-ceramic. Any guidance would be appreciated here. |

I agree with your wife. Keep it for a bit. It’s a great watch, and you may very well find that you grow into it. If you don’t, you won’t lose money by holding it for a bit and trading it out later.
....Or, save like crazy, keep it, add a sub to it, and welcome to the lovely and impoverishing world of watch collecting. Then you’ll have a fancy watch for fancy things (relatively speaking) and a daily watch for more rugged use. |

chrono24 prices are misleading because they take fees for every sale. if you don't like it just PM a trusted seller here and do a trade in. you should expect to lose some money on the sale + whatever you add for the sub

If you don’t like it either sell it or use it as part of a trade to get the watch you really want.

To answer your “how do I” question - Sell it outright. Then buy what you want from those funds. You want to sell to an end user, you don’t want to trade into a merchant who needs to buy low to flip it.

If your wife is ok with it, Sell it yourself thru forums to get top dollar or sell to trusted dealer for a quick sale but they won’t pay you as much for it obviously. Then buy the sub of your choice.
Life’s too short to hang on to a watch you don’t really want. Esp at that price point. |

The number of people who would consider a stainless steel DJ41 to be a "blingy" watch can likely be counted on one hand. I mean it's a Rolex, so it stands out to some extent, but so does the Sub. In fact, the Sub will have even more wrist presence. So if your main reason for getting rid of DJ is because it's too noticeable, you will be disappointed with a Sub for the same reason. If, however, you simply don't like the DJ and the "bling" factor is mental gymnastics that you need to convince yourself to trade up to the Sub, then by all means, go ahead. If you are going to own one nice watch, it better be one that you actually like.

This watch is no more “flashy” then any other Rolex I’m afraid. Wait until you see a shiny ceramic bezel flashing up at you. :-)
However if you’d rather have a sub then definitely trade it. Get the watch you want. The trade will cost you though. Probably around 5k unless you sell the DJ yourself and buy the sub at retail.

#9 trumps all other points so I am fine with flipping for a sub. Your wife does make a good point though. A year is not a long time to feel it out. To your points, invicta makes flashier watches for 100$. Most won’t notice it (though I agree it is more flashy than sub). Rotating bezel you likely won’t use (not to speak for you, but it is novelty IMO). PCLs are the worst, I agree with that, though they look better on jubilee. If only one, go for sub and get it over with you won’t be disappointed. If you can swing both, it be a very dynamic duo!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Agree with the wife, keep it for a year or a few
month to see if you change your mind and ask the AD you bought it from to see if you can be allocated a sub, if not, then sell it and buy the sub from a trusted dealer. |

If you want to get away from the bling, consider an Explorer 1. Best all around watch there is and it has the brushed oyster bracelet.

I would sell it while it's still NIB and get the watch you want.

IF you decide on trading for a sub, I highly recommend the 6 digits ceramic ones as your only (116610 or 126610). I love the 5 digit, but I think the 6 digit is a big upgrade and more sturdy

Explorer can go dress and rugged. Best all around watch from Rolex imho if you’re not looking for shiny/flash.

I don’t think it’s “low-balling”, but yeah, they can’t give you the same price they’ll charge on the turnaround, or there is no profit in the deal. If you want to max out your recovery on the piece, you need to sell it to an end-user yourself.

And maybe it is simply the fact I like the Sub more. Don't need to get in the details on this but it doesn't sing to me the way I think it should. I'll keep it for a while to see how I feel about it. |

Interestingly my friend just commented on how shiny my Sub is last night at dinner.... Agree with other people here that a sub won’t be any less attention grabbing than the DJ but I do think the fluted bezel shines quite a bit. If I were you, I’d keep the DJ and get on a list for a sub from an AD.

I do strongly consider the Explorer to be a favourite, but from a functional standpoint I need the date function.

Keep it and save up for the Sub. A TT DJ is something special, and a DJ / Sub combo is hard to beat.

I love the date function too but being one sided it deprives you of some awesome watches. For me when I’m wearing my OP, Exp, Sub-114060, and Daytona I don’t even really even think of the date.

Sell it or trade it for the watch u want, sooner than later.
If this is a watch in a rotation of many, I might suggest keep it for while to see if u bond. But since this sounds like ur main watch, trade it for something “less flashy” that u can wear everyday/occasion proudly. Life is too short to waste a year on a watch u already know doesn’t fit ur personality, imo. Might be hard to sell it urself. Than trade in with a seller u trust. Personally, davidsw and takuya gave me a fair offer on my trade-in in the past. Ymmv.

This is of course the other option - to keep the DJ41 and not sell it and buy the Sub, then I can sell the DJ41 down the line if I do not find it useful anymore.

You can always brush out the PCLs. I’ve got a white sticks DJ41 with a smooth bezel and that’s what I did, it’s easy to do. PCLs are way too flashy for my style.

try it out for a year. whether you sell it now or a year from now there won't be any marked difference
