He probably purchased it to be top of the list for a Daytona or Pepsi from the local AD. Proof that Biden is just like one of us?

Mr. President, you’re needed in the situation room.

I can’t. I just got the call on the hotline.

Who? Putin? Netanyahu?

No, my Rolex SA. My Pepsi came in. I gotta go!

Let’s not discuss the politics, but I do agree that the article is crap and sub-standard for NYT. A man who has achieved enough to become president of a country, deserves to wear whatever he wants, even if it’s a jubilee with a smooth bezel.
I wouldn’t be so quick to call any article ‘substandard’ for the NYT

Back when a Rolex was considered a true working man's timepiece, wasn't the rule of thumb that a quality watch should cost about one week's salary? At $400k for the Presidency that's $7692. So assuming he didn't go gray, the $7900 MSRP comes in right on track. Definitely must have been a slow news day.

I agree with those who say that the article is clueless and full of watch forum clichés.

Horsesh*t. If you can afford nice things, it is your choice to enjoy them. To heck with the NYT and that "working man" garbage. We all work our butts off for lifetimes. It's our call how to spend it. Period.

Well said!
I’m by no means rich and my wife and I work very hard to provide for our kids.
I saved for 4 years to finally get my new SubDate 126610.
Picked it up yesterday.

On a lighter note... I think the writer of the article probably got too pissed and jealous because he still hasn’t gotten his call for his first Rolex.

On a serious note, thanks guys for reaffirming that the article was indeed ridiculous.

Well it’s not going to help the supply situation at all. This is only going to make Rolex more popular and desirable

i think most commenters did not read the article -- its not that bad .. yes they criticise some, but in the end they make the point that this is a ho-hum rolex an entry level rolex .. and befitting his image.

I agree Ricardo. Did people even read the article? The author basically talks about how in general, US presidents have been staying away from "luxury" watches and Biden is a bit off trend. Here is an excerpt from the article.

Quote:
Which brings us to Mr. Biden, who seems to balance both horological sensibilities (how centrist of him) and is unafraid to show off his haute Swiss watches, all stainless steel, including his Rolex, an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional and Omega Seamaster Diver 300M both of which retail for around $5,000 or $6,000.

So what to make of Mr. Biden’s watches?

Whether a conscious fashion statement or not, the high-end, but macho, watches suggest that, even at 78, this former high school football star of the Kennedy years still wants to be seen as a he-man, rugged and young at heart (see his aviator sunglasses).

They also embody a classic version of the American Dream: that anyone, even a kid from Scranton, can make it to the pinnacle of power.

Then again, he may just wish to make it to White House meetings on time.

Agree - I am not even sure it is that critical, more just highlighting the differences. It isn’t very well written and I don’t think the conclusion about choosing his Omegas to look young and macho makes much sense.

Seems like a good idea for a story, just not the best execution - maybe rushed to get it out.

Probably the most offensive part is labelling us “watch snobs” )

I remember an article from Bush 1...who at that time wore a timex vs the Soviet leaders Rolex. Clinton also wore (mostly) inexpensive watches when out in public. Lots of optics I suppose. Article is just a snotty piece.

Omg. Take politics away. He was a senator forever, then a VP and then a private citizen that likely made a lot of money doing speeches. He is vastly successful. Why can't he wear a rolex?

I say good for him.

This. When my girlfriend told me about the NYT article, I said "Biden's been working for over 60 years! And even if we just account for the VP salary, it makes sense that Biden can afford a Datejust"
