Is the submariner the king of the jungle ?

Hi friends
Despite there exist other watches models more expensive or whatever bla, bla, bla, I wonder if the Rolex submariner (any model) is the king of the jungle among any dive watch along the world.
I think yes it is and moreover, if this were true, who gets the second place ?
I dont know this…
Thank you !!!

It’s pretty clear from the post he is talking about divers, so the Daytona is irrelevant here.

More Daytona hype please. It’s not even the king of chronographs, IMO.

Daytona isn't even the king of Chronos, so I am not sure how you can conclude it's the king of divers.

Speedmaster, Navitimer, El Primero quickly come to mind...

Maybe he was thinking if you "dive" into a stack of tires at the track while doing a pit stop?

Daytona is not king. Unlike the Daytona, the sub (pretty much simultaneously with BP) broke new ground with their dive watch and indeed it was used heavily in the dive industry and even military. The Daytona has no such legacy. It used an outsourced movement (nothing wrong with that per se) and was just another chrono. It was not the chronomat, navitimer, el primero, heuer, or seiko chronos that actually either did stuff or were the first at something. Daytona has been on the wrists of those watching the people wearing the subs actually do important things.

I'll call the Submariner as king, only because i'm biased as I have one, it could never be a Daytona though as it is not a watch I like.

It’s a great watch for sure and certainly has more prestige than any other current diver. But Tudor and Omega arguably offer a better product and a better price in the Pelagos and Planet Ocean, respectively, assuming we are talking about current lineups here (Breitling too, for that matter). The Sub is definitely prettier than those two and the one you would pick if you’re looking to impress your friends.

There are many great dive watches around but today its very doubtful if 90% of Rolex or any other dive type watches bought ever see any water other than perhaps a dip in the pool or shower. Myself used a 16600 SD for many years as a PADI dive instructor but lost it in the Red sea,but was replaced with my dive insurance. After I used a Citizen Aqualand 11 for many years, and it gave far more diving related information than a simple time lapse bezel on my SD. Any dive watch today is mainly used purely as a back up just encase dive computer fails.

Padi, every time I dive I hope I'm following the previous path of someone wearing (and losing) their Rolex. All I ever found was a St. Moritz (which I still use to this day)

Well if you ever dive in the Red Sea there is a SD belonging to me somewhere in the blue just of the north pinnacle of the Elphinstone reef. It was lost around 22 years ago but depths off the reef go down to over 1000m.I was trying to get back into the pick up boat after a dive in the Red Sea and when we surfaced the sea was quite rough with heavy swell. I started to take my BC off when the Egyptian deck hand just pulled up my BC and left me suspended by my SD bracelet. It was good job the spring-bar failed, as they are not designed to have almost 15 stone dangling from them, one SD lost to the abyss but I still have my wrist.

Padi56,

Wonderful post - hate you lost the SD but you lost it doing meaningful work in the Red Sea. Really appreciate reading stories of folks actually using their watches as they were intended to be used for is liberating to read. I have had my 5 digit GMT II and Sea Dweller for most of my U.S. Military career. 37 countries, 2 summits, 8 deployments and 4 combat tours. Always had one of them on my wrist and happy to have the rich history, dings, scratches, and chips infused into both of them.

Did not know you lost it in the Red Sea, heartbreaking!

I was diving in the Florida Keys and the captain told me the day before someone lost his sub close to where we were diving and to keep an eye out. I looked a lot, kinda ruined my dive since I was looking for the dang watch over enjoying myself.
