I buy for the aesthetic (beautiful timeless designs, pure class, sophistication), quality (reliable robust movements that are widely serviceable and can last a lifetime), and because of the superior engineering and thoughtful research (best clasps, great bracelets, results in an outstanding wearing experience and unparalleled feel-on-the-wrist, which most other brands fail miserably).

Remember: Half the watch is the bracelet, and Rolex bracelets by themselves go for $2k to $3k, for good reason.

I'm not sure where "reward yourself for a long term life or business goal after having saved money and wanting one for a long time" falls, but that's me...

Here is why I collect Rolexes

Investor - not all the way buying because of potential growth, but love the fact Rolex retains value.
Aestheticist - definitely most eye appealing watches for the money
Collectaholic - my name is Ruly and I’m a watchaholic
Aficionado - I like good things in life
Joiner - do have bit of FOMO

Aestheticist, Technologist and Aficionado for me. I like how the watches look, how they perform, and how they’re built.

I rarely show my watches off to others - most of the time they’re always hidden away under my sleeves - and “resale value” is a complete irrelevance to me. I just buy watches for my own enjoyment, so Investment, Joiner and Heroist are the ones that are a million miles away from my mindset.

No one is saying it or admitting it, but I am convinced that if they lost half of their value, people would buy something else, like Omega and other more original brands...

I'm lucky to have nothing to do with it, and to have it out of passion and plenty of others alongside, but this is what I see around me and I proclaim it.

The brand image is so strong that everyone wants or has it. Very few enthusiasts today, that's what Rolex owners are like, this survey means nothing and reflects nothing other than a lie...

Somewhere between casual and sentimental. Voted sentimental.

My father had one I always admired and it just always embedded in me that it was just the moves or best that I had seen so rugged yet aesthetically pleasing. It’s mine now, and I’ll never let it go.

I also grew up reading vintage National Geographic and watching James Bond/Indiana Jones. Much of that type of a childhood helped to influence the feelings I already had for the brand. Rugged yet stylish a go anywhere do everything type watch that looks great diving, in the jungle, secret missions or at a formal event.

I guess sentimentalist since that was what originally put it in me that it was the brand for me, but largely casual as well.

My dad's goal was to own one before he was 30, and got his daydate at 26, I wanted same goal and got mine when I was 30.

My dad told me owning a nice watch is like owning a nice car...... The money I've wasted on cars and bikes I wish I started appreciating watches years ago. I smile every time I pick out a watch to wear

Other here. When I finally gave myself permission, there wasn't much else to chose from where I live, and purchasing luxury items on-line wasn't even a consideration for me (then).

Couldn’t give a damn about values. (Although it helps the debate with my wife when wanting to add more)

I’m absolutely a ‘sentimentalist’ !!

Great thread idea.

Wanted an SS Rolex for decades finally bought one, however for any purchase

Aestheticist and technologist for my votes.

The value retention is nice but I have other watches that don't have this quality and enjoy them just the same since I don't intend to sell any. The only value point that becomes important is if I can afford to purchase one and do I personally think it's worth it. After that it doesn't matter.

I have a partial link to sentimentalist but it's not due to another person. Rolex was the brand I went with for my first mechanical watch long ago. I've gone through some years without a Rolex in the collection but feel better when one's there.

For me it's a combination of good bracelets and conservative design, good reliable movements, retain value well, toughness and resistance and overall price.

Mine just caught my eye and I fell in love. Didn’t think about watches or watch brands previously, just love at first sight!
Unlike the missus. Been together 22 years so I’ll probably learn to love her at some point maybe? Meh, who knows?

I think this is a pretty good summary (except the clasp on my 5 digit sub is not particularly impressive).

Plus I have always wanted a Rolex. Growing up all the successful people that I admired (not famous, just successful) like our family doctor or the bank president where my mom worked all wore Rolexes. I saw it as a sign of success and when I learned more about the quality and design of the watches, it cemented the goal. After many years of taking care of careers and businesses and raising a family, I finally had the means to buy one and pulled the trigger without hesitation.

What Type Rolex Owner Are You?

Combination of sentimentalist and passion for all things horological.

Both my biological father and step father wore rolexes. As did my mother.

When I inherited my father’s DJ. It became my most treasured possession and I set out to learn every thing I could about it and admired Rolex even more along the way.
