What about your collection proves you are anti-hype?
I feel like at least once in every thread someone gets accused of being into Rolex for just hype or investment purposes.
So what about your collection or collection strategy/past decisions/desires PROVES that you are against the hype (whether instagram hype or common forum opinion). I recognize no one needs to prove anything to anyone - just hoping for a fun conversation. Here is mine: I like the WG numeral "T-rex" hand explorer 1. I prefer my Breitling Superocean 42 ii blue over my YM 40 blue and recently parted with the latter against most everyone's advice on here. I parted with the hulk during its peak hype time because I found it "too green". I am on the cusp of parting with the SD4K against popular wisdom. I love Seiko! I think the white dial DJ 41 is clearly the best over the blue and others. I am personally not a big fan of the Daytona line and have never tried to acquire one. I liked the white milgauss before it became more fashionable. * Now I'm sure you guys have been in the game a lot longer than me and have better ones! Would love to hear. |

Does owning a 124060 over a submariner date count? lol
To me it’s the purest modern iteration of what the Submariner was, love how clean and balanced the design is. |

I picked the black Sub over the Hulk
Other than that I’m riding 1st class on the hype train

Great thread idea brother. I don’t know if I can give any better answer than my join date as I’ve always always been a Rolex fanboy, 2012
Long before all the hype and investment threads. I remember in those days there were never ever questions about either. Collection wise? Well I think nowadays every single Rolex they make is considered a hot model which could be considered hype I guess. I Have a couple 5 digits that I don’t believe everyone is after. But everything else probably falls into the hype category but for me the only hype I care about is my own. As you know I recently added a couple Everose pieces but not a Daytona or DayDate which are the two that are mainly hyped. My two maybe not so much.

But seriously. No one should ever worry about their collection being hype, anti-hype, whatever. Just have fun collecting |

I'm not anti-hype, and buy what I like, including this piece that lost 35k the moment I left the store.

Funny question because this has crossed my mind before. My first Rolex was a GMT 116710LN back when every AD had them in the case. Same with my Hulk. Got a 116500 white which was not easy. I'd say the 116655 RG YM is the defining unhyped reference in my collection.

I’ve turned down (at msrp or less at the AD)…..
A ton of 5 digit gmts (too small) 3 hulks 1 blue sky dweller 1 Chnr 1 blue wg daytona 1 wg daytona on rubber 1 YG Daytona Newman (want this one though) 1 SS black dial Daytona 1 blue dial ROC (liked that one) 1 blue 5711 (this was exceptionally disappointing to me) and on and on…… If I don’t really love it, or can’t REALLY afford it, I won’t buy it, regardless of value. As mentioned earlier I recently added this beast out of pure love and fascination. Plus because there’s not many out there that made it even better. I absolutely love this watch and any SkyD because of its complications, design, look, and overall awesomeness.
Even in SS I went with black and not the over hyped Blue dial. Some think the SkyD is a over blown DateJust, granted the SkyD does have its hype following I went with down the lesser traveled road. If the SkyD never ever had a blue dial I’d still be a massive massive fanboy. Just not on jubilee. Not sure if all this qualifies me as a non hype follower but I only buy/wear what “hypes” me up.

Put a different brand besides Rolex in your collection and you will be anti hype. But, I feel you and I , and many on this forum are not feeding the hype, perhaps I am wrong in saying this, when I see a collection with 8 Rolex all with black dials and oyster bracelets? From my time on the forum there seem to be several members who own many different brands along with their Rolex. Members don't always post photos of what's in there collection but I can tell from the comments that many are familiar with other brands besides Rolex. For me personally I know Rolex makes a great watch and they always release something that makes want to go back in to that AD and try to get it. So once you are in it, it can be hard to just move away from the brand. It's always pulling you back.

I guess it would be all the sub-$200 watches that I own and love.
My Orient Bambino watches are good examples, as well as others. I know my limits and I know what I like. Those criteria are what guide my choices.

My 1st Rolex was a " gently preowned " 5513 I purchased in 1982 for $298.00 a used Precision in 89, 1st DJ about 98, OP in 2020 and another DJ in 2020. It wasn't until I joined this forum that I even heard there was a hype. Of course it's everywhere now.
I have a few different brands now, gifted quite a few earlier this year. Huge fan of the Breitling Superocean 42's. But mostly only buy Omega now. But if Rolex brings out a black bezel GMT2 I may have to have one of those. Not because of hype but because I have always wanted one.

If I were gonna buy a watch tomorrow it would prob be a Santos or moonwatch….no joke. Just something great about them both. I’d also do a rg YM but can’t pull it of with my skin tone.

I find it crazy that there are some fantastic manufactures that have used gold pieces for less than the market of a colored OP 41. Those who aren’t in it for the hype can find some amazing trades and deals out there.

I bought my first Rolex new in 1984, I don’t think there was much hype then. My current pair of Rolex are hyped by many, they get regular wear and rotation by me. I also have a Speedy and a couple of Seikos that get regular use.
I do not seek to own all Rolex models and variations. |

First Rolex I got was a DSSD. Could’ve waited longer for a sub but absolutely loved the way it looked. It’s such a beast and and has such presence. Second a CHNR, love the TT and colour it brings and versatility (again could’ve picked up something else more hype if I wanted). Having said that my next one or two will probably be the BLNR and BLRO

The fact that I wore my 14060M everyday for over 8 years until I got “the call” a couple months ago for my 124060. I just love everything about the Submariner and now I own 2 of the best references. I also have no desire to get a Daytona or GMT.

Don’t have a collection. Didn’t care for Rolex actually until I started on a mission to get one for my dad’s bday. Since then, for the past year, I’ve fallen in love with a Daytona Panda and been dreaming about it. After that I am done, save for maybe an Oyster Perpetual for my brother’s 35th. THEN I am done. I personally don’t care for hype, what others think, etc. I buy what I like based on aesthetics and functions. Fact of the matter is that I don’t share the same taste in some of the models that folks on here go crazy about. Goes to show I couldn’t care less about the hype. If Rolex’s demand drops to 0% tomorrow I would still want a Panda. Only thing is that I would probably ask for a discount in that case. Lol
