My personal collection is extensive, and used to be almost exclusively vintage, and yes there is a lot of Patek, AP, FP Journe and A Lange.

This razzle-dazzle G(e)MT is just a great bit of fun that showcases the expert craftsmanship that Rolex built their name on.

I'd love to change your mind, but opinions are what make us human!

cheers!

I know what you mean because I once tried on a Submariner SABR at a grey and I was wearing a tshirt and jeans and it looked amazing. So It definitely doesn’t have to be formal and I doubt you dress like Elton John (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
Congratulations and post more pictures of this beauty!

Thanks mate!

The Daytona was a bit of a cherry on the top and yeah it was allocated to me as I expressed an interest previously and just so happened to arrive in the same shipment at the SARU.

My AD has my entire 'desirable' list and so when they receive an item that's on my list I get the first refusal call.

Being a good customer and being a genuine enthusiast goes a long way with some ADs (not all...London ones are assholes) but the old school family owned ADs appreciate an enthusiast.

So was the green Daytona allocated to you because you bought the GMT?

Part of my business is Foreign Exchange, I did not pay in £ GBP for these pieces, but £ GBP is my native currency so that's why I listed the price in GBP, rest assured I paid the full Rolex RRP for these pieces in the domestic currency of the AD, so no one is at all at risk.

Thanks man! I appreciate your comments

The more I wear the SARU the more it fits with my hippy aesthetic; Sebagos, shorts and a hemp shirt suit this thing down to the ground. I'd look like such a tool wearing it with anything too formal.

And you're right, Elton John is a total boss, the man has seen some s**t and props to him to being true to himself. Nothing looks as good as confidence feels!

I think John Mayer really described best the emotions behind wearing a quite razzle-dazzle watch in his Hodinkee Talking Watches,

"...and I do believe if you're a big enough enthusiast of Rolex, that you can understand the rarity of the piece and also the rarity of the thought behind creating the piece. You can then wear the watch as a collector more than someone who goes: '...I just believe that I'm the guy who should be wearing a full gradient circle of sapphires..I think that's me, I see a lot of myself in Diamond set lugs...', you don't, you keep the story the way it is, and then after wearing it for a while you say I actually kinda like it..."

If you don't absolutely love it, don't buy it. Simple.

That’s fantastic, congrats again. I own the green 116508 and think it’s a really special price. I have to admit that the special gemset Rolexes have really been growing on me, especially the GMT - love it in the rose gold. Are these pretty difficult to come by?

My AD offered me a full diamond one with the bracelet but that was a bit too much for me, both in terms of the bling factor as well as the cost.

Glad to hear there are still some great AD’s out there, especially in a city like London where it can’t be easy to be considered a great customer.

Whilst this reference might not be for everyone, I appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for this hobby! Which is something this forum often lacks with the ongoing threads of prices, brand bashing and supply issues.

This thread has been a refreshing read so thank you for sharing your purchase, both which I could not afford. Although I did try on the original GMT II Ice.

The Green Daytona is such a stunner, I absolutely adore mine and to be honest I'm equally thrilled to have it as a companion piece to the SARU, it's really unique and it'll never leave my collection.

I was a skeptic about gem sets, I didn't want to appear like an early 00s gangsta rapper, but with where I live and my beachy laid back lifestyle, it kinda works... I built a business on luxury goods, and from a very young age was fascinated with anything shiney! Those UK TRF members will know a TV show called the Crystal Maze with Richard O'Brien, it got me fascinated with gems and jewels as a kid, and so I have a history with lusting after these types of things.

With regards to scarcity, I really don't know and I think it's unique for every AD client, but I do know that I spend frequently with one AD and have done for 5 years and I had to be vetted by Rolex SA in Geneva before they agreed to sell it to me (I had to send in a notarized copy of my passport) The Phillips auction house always describe these SARUs/SABRs/EMBRs and SAs as "Extremely rare and fine", so one would assume there is an element of scarcity around them, but also the market for them is much smaller than say versus a BLRO or BLNR, so I honestly don't know if they're rare, the best thing to do is to ask your AD and if you're genuine about buying then maybe they'd hook you up.

I agree that the full pavé bracelet and dial are too much, the Bezel and case set models are/were traditionally made for the Asian market where full ice was never en vogue but cultural difference will drive different markets, as a multinational European I find my format to be very agreeable and I would avoid the full Pavé bracelet and dial....maybe the dial...maybe

Just to clarify, I didn't get this from the UK, although I'm a Brit, I don't live in the UK, and I find most UK ADs to be really awful human beings.

Thanks mate, yup when I joined TRF in 2007 it was a different landscape for sure. I've always maintained that addict level enthusiasm for the brand and I appreciate your comments.

Also the GMT II Ice what a thing! Only Ronaldo can pull that look off!

EDIT: Just read the whole thread and saw you bought the SARU and paired it with a green Daytona! EPIC! Well done.

So beautiful! Congratulations.

James, are you actually a jeweler? If so, it makes all the more sense to own and appreciate these beautiful works of art.

I really regret passing on one in 2019. It’s a pretty special piece.

Absolutely agreed... and even at 200k it would trade at half of Rainbow’s price...
