Ideally, 4-5 for me but I’m past that.

I currently have 5.

There are at least 5 more that I want.

You are asking the wrong crowd of people.

I cycle through about 15-20 watches and there are more that are no longer in the rotation.

They all have a place in my heart, so there are never too many.

I would say no more than 7. One for every day of the week is enough.

When you don’t start wearing what you have. It could be 2 or a 100.

This sort of resonates with me

I’m at 4 right now but ideally I’d have just 2 or maybe 3 tops.

IMO the number in a collection is less relevant. Quality over quantity. And not quality in terms of Watch build, but the quality it adds to your collection. I think any watch not worn, connected with/bonded with, having some emotional tie to, or just unappreciated doesn’t belong.

2 is plenty for me, have had dozens in the past. But tend to wear only one 95% of the time, the other on special occasions or when one is being serviced.

I no longer wish to have watches laying around that I no longer wear. But also highly agree with a previous statement made. I do prefer quality over quantity. And have moved in that direction over the years. I ended up with a couple very accurate and dependable pieces.

There is no right answer. For some, a couple are enough.

Mine are a collection that varies between 6 and 10. I wear them all. I’m not distressed if I don’t wear one for a few weeks or months. The core pieces I have, I love.

Your mileage will vary.

One or two per year will be fine for me,
so if I start this year, unless something
radical (that I can afford)shows up, I will
stop on about 8 pieces

How many watches is too many?

5 watches are probably too many for me.

If you make the right choices, 2 watches are all you need.

For example, Submariner and Datejust 41.

However, I have a Submariner and a Speedmaster, and I’m never getting rid of either, so now I need a Datejust and those 3 watches are all I really need.

But I’ll probably add a 4th watch anyway, so that’s how I get to 5 watches being too many for me.

Honestly don’t understand the need to have more than 3. Okay maybe even 5 but when I see a collection of dozens or more my first thought is “why?” To each their own and not trying to offend anyone. IMO, it’s like having too much clothes that a lot doesn’t get worn. I’ve substantial downsized my wardrobe so that I wear each piece more often. Same thing with cars. Too many and oftentimes they’re just sitting there collecting dust. Kind of pointless.

I don't want to have to go count what's currently in my collection so I'll have to say 50 watches is just 1 too many. Although 1 per week of the year doesn't seem unreasonable?

N+1 & S-1 where N is the number you have now and S is the number before your spouse leaves you.

No, but seriously, I would say 8 might be too many. If you go more than a week without wearing a watch, it's not being appreciated.

That said, if you have a dress watch you might wear it once a year (Eg Cellini etc).

"Talking watches" makes me feel like a pauper.

Anyone have insight?

When one can't afford to look after them and have them serviced in a timely manner, then one probably needs to have a good hard look at the situation.

10 would be a good number, but no more than 20. Especially if they are all high end watches.
