Quick opinion poll..

Given all the threads on dial swaps and colour changes, what’s the opinion on the ongoing value of the watch. Am I right in thinking if an RSC changes the dial this should have no negative bearing on ongoing value? An example would be the 40mm RG day date. If RSC changes a white dial for example to the Olive dial, would this watch then appraise at olive dial values? Or would this be a negative as sometimes seen in aftermarket dials? I appreciate the reference numbers do not distinguish between dial colours but for provenance does this matter? Genuinely interested in thoughts!

I’ve always felt that if the watch was born a certain way it’ll be more desired by true collectors.

I’m also interested to know this since I’m thinking about a dial swap but still undecided. I’m not trying to do it for financial gains but I wouldn’t want it negatively impacting my watch.

If I was buying a used late model Rolex (which I’m not) I would want it to be as it was made, even if rhe dial swap was done at an RSC. Something vintage, less concerned.

I assume we are talking about a Datejust? IMO it won’t matter much. If you select a really good looking dial then it may be a positive. I would retain receipts proving where the work was done.

Dial swap on a sports watch noooooo

His example was a DD if you bothered to read. And I’m thinking about my SkyD

Another good question is would Rolex assist you in changing the dial to look like a more limited reference?

I would tend to agree with most who said original would be preferred in the future.

I think it only makes sense to do this if you have a datejust with a hideously ugly dial.

A RG DD and a SkyD, I would leave stock.

If the RSC swaps your dial, 99% of people could never figure out it wasn’t original.

If you go from white to olive dial dd40
Or white to blue dial skyD
Or black dial to green dial gold Daytona

In the first 2 examples do the reference numbers inside the lugs now disagree with the dial? I’m asking, I don’t know. This could give someone cause to call it a fake watch if the values are different based on dial color. There could also be a case for fraud depending on how it was marketed.

The *FULL* reference number definitely does distinguish between dial colors. For example, the full reference number for my watch is 279171-0001. Reference numbers 279171-0017, 279171-0021 and 279171-0023 have different dials.

If you were to eventually sell (or trade) the watch and include all of the tags and stuff that came with the watch, the full reference number will be shown on one of the tags.

My warranty card has the color of the dial listed for SkyD since it’s prev warranty card. If ever I decide to let it go, I’ll likely provide the RSC receipt for dial change.
