Service dials and hands...
I am thinking of purchasing a 5513, to use as an everyday watch, that has had it's Tritium dial and hands replaced with a S.Luminova service dial and hand set...
It can be had for far less than an all original piece, glows brightly and there are no worries should anything happen to the dial and hands... The watch has a great look to it and still has the wonderful domed acrylic crystal... Thoughts...??? |

As in? You know it has service hardware as long as you pay accordingly, should be fine, I do like working lume on a watch. |

As others have said already, cost should reflect the inclusion of service parts as
It is no longer original. Still a beautiful watch and working like plots is a big bonus. Quite sure these too will appreciate in value over the years |

A very viable option ..
I'm really hung up on originality in my watches. Many collectors are. If I was more sensible, I'd accept old watches for what they are and have a second look at offerings with service dials , service hands, later issue bracelets and whatever.
If it's all Rolex issue parts, presents well and " .. can be had for far less than an all original piece ...". I say "GO FOR IT !" |

Sounds like a plan. Only the select few can collect safe queens. Wear it and enjoy it for what it is, a forty or sixty year old tool watch that has been used and is continue to be used.

I say yes to service dial and hands, especially if the dial type matches the original, i.e. wg surrounds Luminova service dial on a 1980s 5513 that originally had a wg surrounds tritium dial. Heres mine from 1989 with 2013 service dial, hands. crystal and lume pip from the RSC.

Bear in mind that it will be more difficult to sell if you ever decide to part with it. I've always said "This one's a keeper" when I've bought a watch. Many of them haven't been.
If budget allows, I'd save my pennies and go for an original one. Original 5513s are pretty much as liquid as cash, and appreciate more compared to today's poor interest rates. You're not spending money if you buy one; you're just putting it in a different vehicle. That said, I do like OEB's above. |

I have two older watches with tritium dials and I loath being unable to tell time at night. I would personally go out of my way for a suolperluminova upgrade.

A friend in Los Angeles just sent me a photo of a 5513 dating from 1964 for sale at a jewellery exchange for $19500. Service dial, insert and crown. Nice 93150. I explained it is missing $10,000 of parts and should be worth about half the asking price.
Just do your homework and learn to assess the correlation of price & condition. |

Why don’t you trade for superluminova watches???? Would be an easy trade as most collectors want original pieces…..

I saw this 5513 with service dial and hands in a window here yesterday and remembered this thread. Price is about US$10,600 for watch only, with replaced insert, I think. Seems they're getting more expensive, like that Daytona behind it, and everything else.

A better deal than that new Daytona behind it anyway (US$33k)

If you have a nice one, hold onto it until you need the cash. Prices are only going to go in one direction... |
