Funny, when i was in Vegas there were stores side by side. One nearly empty displays, the other jam-packed with timepieces. Guess which one has PLENTY of stock? My wife was not impressed with Hublot, asked how do you even tell the time on them. And yes she's my enabler, and helps pick out timepieces. She even MADE ME (kinda sorta) get the OMEGA 50th Anniv Buzz Butt after i was offered it from AD and turned it down. So got it, and very glad i did! I marrried Mrs. Right

Yes, they don't care what *we* think, but they are highly preoccupied with what *other* people think.

Show me a rich guy wearing a Timex or Casio and that's a guy who doesn't care what *anybody* thinks.

As someone else said, this is the opposite of true.

Status symbols are for people who care what other people think.

You’re thinking about the rich, not the wealthy. They’re very different. The Gates, Buffets, Musks, Bezos, etc of the world couldn’t give 2 what anyone thinks. The real estate developer in south beach might though… or Bezos might flip over his girlfriend digging Leonardo DeCaprio but that’s a different subject

So... footballers and they guys at TPG. Wonder how many watches RM gives away for free every year so their product gets exposure. When the watch inevitably get stolen, do the footballers/etc have to pay for it or do they another free one? Anyone know?

Buffet wears a timex and Gates, I am quite sure, does not wear an RM.

Why anyone cares what Musk thinks about watches is anyones guess.

But RM are for people who care what other people think.

I agree, I don't find them pleasant to the eyes... I can't click with their design philosophy but can appreciate the tech behind it.

They are more of a status symbol indeed, and were marketed as such.

Everyone has different tastes, and clearly these folks cited aren’t ‘watch people’, but if anyone genuinely thinks the absence of Gates/Buffett/<insert name of billionaire here> wearing RM (or indeed any other luxury items) is evidence of them not buying into status symbols, they haven’t been paying attention to their real estate portfolios, mega yachts, private jets, art collections, public philanthropy, and frankly even their funding of the indulgences of their children (e.g. competitive equestrianism).

All of these are capable of playing the exact same role in their circles, and realistically far more than any (serially-produced) watch, RM or not.

And this is forgetting about the actual PR people and lobbyists under their employ, which by definition contradicts any notion that this ilk of person doesn’t care about others’ opinions. In many ways, they care far more than we ever will, and need to, as it is only on account of the historical grace of the unwashed masses (us) they have been able to rise to their lofty heights, and hope to stay there.

I hate stuff like this, whenever I see posts on social media or in an article.

Just because Gates wheres a $20 Casio and Buffett wears a Timex doesn't mean a thing. Absolutely nothing.

It just means they aren't into high horology.

Just like I'm not into cigars, but a lot of "wealthy" people are. Doesn't mean in order to be successful like me, you should also *not* be into smoking cigars.

Warren Buffett isn't into supercars. Other billionaires are. It means absolutely nothing.

The silly articles I see say things like "See? Only the non-true wealthy minded people care about Richard Mille, or Patek, or Rolex. Bill Gates wears a $20 cheapo watch."

I wear Richard Mille, Patek, Rolex, high-end watches for me and me alone. I do not post them on social media. I do not care what other people think.
