Cellini to be banished from the U.S.

While this news will probably evoke celebration on TRF, I have it from a good source that the Cellini line will soon no longer be sold in the United States. Apparently the series will still be sold overseas, in Europe and Asia, since these are apparently the key markets for this variant. I guess U.S buyers could always get the watch abroad, just not here.

How many of you will miss the Cellini?

There was talk of this here earlier in the year. Maybe Rolex USA decided to cancel the Cellini after reading about its namesake's various murders and assorted other crimes.

Is it lack of sales or alligator straps in USA? Maybe both.

Hard to believe there are more aligator straps in Europe than USA.

There are 1.3 million aligators walking around here in FL. Aligator hunting season starts August 15 and ends on November 1. Just about every restaraunt down here has some form of aligator dish on the menu.

There are another 2 million in Louisiana.

My ad had told me that rolex was having problems importing them because if import restrictions. Another ad said. Really only rolex knows.

Agree. No reason to protect alligators.

For some reason the urge to get a Cellini is even strong now.

I don't mind at all. I don't do "dress" watches.

Only one Cellini I ever wanted, and that was the Prince with the art deco sunburst motif on the case sides. THAT was a cool watch.

Also, the white gold version with the squared off dials and the 3/6/9 dial. Reminded me of square 70's Lincoln gauges.

If I was a banker, I'd wear one of these. Alas, I'm a middle manager hiding in a giant corporation. Salaryman through and through so it's Datejusts and Daytonas for me.

Banished from the US? Seems Rolex discontinuing the Cellini line is always being discussed but except for the Cellini dual time, the line continues. If I could wear a 39mm watch with 20mm lugs I would wear one.

Not discontinuing the Cellini. Discontinuing the sale of the Cellini in the United States.

Isn't this because the alligator leather strap is no longer able to be imported into the country?

I am not sure why people think alligators are an endangered species. There are 5 million alligators in the southern US.

GA, FL, MS, AL, TX and LA all have hunting seasons for alligators. In FL, it’s August 15 from November 1.

Many southern restaurants have a variety of alligator dishes on their menus. Fried alligator bites with a creamy mustard sauce is one of my favorites.

CA had a crazy law in place about gator/crocodile leather but I’m pretty sure a federal judge over turned it.

Also, I’m pretty sure the new Omega Speedmaster isn’t available on an alligator strap because of the CA law, but again, I think that law was over turned by a federal judge.

Gators aren’t an endangered species but a Rolex Daytona or a Rolex GMT certainly are.

+1. American Alligators are far from endangered, and the alligator industry has contributed significantly to its conservation in the US.

The California case is still being litigated, but you're right in that a federal judge granted an injunction back in October of last year. You can follow along here: https://www.govinfo.gov/app/details/...-02471/context

Even if they were endangered, Rolex would only need like one of them to make all the straps for the Cellini's they sell

I’m not sure why there’s no love for the line on TRF. I understand not having the need for a dress watch, and I don’t need one often. OTOH, it’s the only guilloché dial offered by Rolex, and the PM has a nice heft. I was at a pre-owned dealer recently, asking about a dress watch, and I asked him about ALS and The Big Three. He said, ‘Rolex is cheaper, more durable- that’s the one to consider.’ This, from someone who had no dress watches in the case!

The dress watch demographic is skewed a lot older - probably not big forum users. Also many prefer a more finely finished timepiece when going for a dress watch.

Excited for the FOMO and all the forthcoming "My grail Cellini arrived" after years of disregard.

Cellini will be the new Air-King.
