I think the watches are nice, but the snowflake hour hand kills the proportions of the watch imo. If it had just a simple hour hand, I would def own a black bay 79018V.

The snowflake hand isn't meant to look good, it was designed in the 1960s in collaboration with French Navy divers, who found the smaller mercedes hands, which Rolex first used in the 1930s on dress watches, didn't hold enough lume to be sufficiently legible under water.

Thank you for the info I often wondered why they were like that. Correct on the other post. You were not expressing your opinion about the hands just giving why they were like that.

Endless discussion unless you identify the categories for comparison and give the weights to each. I find that balancing form, function and price are the measures I use. I am a true Rolex Fan and have been for more than 30 years but the current situation with availability and game playing has diminished the brand for me and I do not enjoy ownership or wearing my Rolex watches as much as in the past. Other than hype and speculative prices I find Tudor to be more to my liking as a brand and for wear. I have a 7.5-7.75 inch wrist and like my BB 41's more than my Submariners. I prefer the Tudor Pelagos to the Submariner and the DSSD. I also like the bling of my Rolex Pepsi when I want to flex a little but wear my Tudor GMT 10x more and actually like it better. I own both SS Ceramic Daytona's but like my Tudor Black and White dial Chrono's better.

So why own Rolex? Good question and one I am looking at and trying to determine. But without a direct answer I will sit tight and enjoy all my watches until I figure it out.

Not even close. Two completely different brands.

I’d say the 58 compares favorably with the historic Subs:

Manufacture calibre
200m water resistance
Aluminum insert
Smaller-wearing

But with:
Longer PR
COSC certification

The BB58 compared to the old submariners.
The Ranger compared to the Explorer.
And if you're anti rolex, which I know some of you are, it makes the comparison even better.

Although there aren't many Tudor watches that really appeal to me, I think the brand now has a better image.

Between the extra bling on newer Rolex models and the whole Instagram effect I think they can appear a bit tacky and chavy now, unfortunately. Hopefully that will change in the future.

I disagree that Tudor and Rolex are different audiences. Maybe eventually sure. But I own both brands and love them both. I had bb58 blue, bb58 bronze boutique edition and the bb gmt. All amazing watches. The gmt is every bit as good as the Rolex Pepsi, just more traditional and tool watch vibes. It’s only fault is it’s slightly thick. If they fixed that, I wouldn’t want any more Rolex gmts as it’s really that good.

Oh and the bb58 bronze is perfection. If the 3,6,9 make it to other 58 models with the t fit clasp, game changer.

It's subjective. Other than the lack of proper adjustability on the clasp, my BB Chrono is built every bit as well as my Rolex models. It keeps excellent time (though it is powered by Breitling, which I happen to think is cool) and I am thrilled with it as much as my Rolex watches.

As others mentioned, the BB558 is about as close as it gets. But, its certainly not on par with most Rolex models. Lack of ezlink or adjustment, faux rivots really set it back. It certainly runs as well as my submariner, but they are in very different leagues. Its a lot of watch for the price but not on par with Rolex.

A better question is required. "As good as Rolex" in what context? A Tudor is just as good as Rolex if you're using them as paper weights for example.

Tudor has a METAS certified movement and Rolex does not. Rolex is almost as good as Tudor.

Love my Pelagos. I’ve only had a SD and a sub on my wrist for a few weeks worth of time (nice friend lent me both) but I can’t imagine preferring either to my Pelagos for daily wear or diving.

The lume is incredible. I am amazed that Rolex allow Tudor to produce a diving watch with such superior lume. After 8 hours the the Tudor leaves the Sub for dead.

You’ll obviously get lots of “no” replies here but in all reality owning both, the quality of my BB58 is every bit as good as the quality of any Rolex I’ve owned.

If you compare it directly against a 5 digit Sub as both have aluminium bezel inserts, the BB58 is, frankly, better.

I can only speak for the BB58 of course.

Any Tudor model that can compare directly and on the same bar with Rolex?

Here you go... There are definite similarities. In general, I'm not a fan of Tudors but I really love this one. I also like the 925.

Intent of design can't overcome someone's dislike of a design. It's a great design but if it isn't attractive to someone that what difference does it make what the design intent was?

Just providing some info/reasoning for the guy, not trying to make him like it.

An obvious comparison, but the Black Bay 36 can stand next to the Explorer and hold its own. I recently comparison shopped the two and while I think the Exp 1 has the edge due to its classic dial and movement, the construction of the BB36 including the bracelet is nothing to scoff at. I went Explorer because ultimately that's what I wanted and I knew that something similar wouldn't scratch the itch, but if I were making a decision based purely on value with no preconceptions, I might have easily gone the other way.

I have found that the Tudor that I can actually buy, own, and wear (P LHD) compares quite favorably to the Rolex I can't.

However, if you have access to both, there is no comparison. Considering a Rolex SS ref runs double to triple the price of a Tudor, there shouldn't be.
