+1

If there's one thing i'm know for over the decades, it is my 'event outfits'. Would post pics, yet it's all really quite embarrassing (and, well, ok, what timepiece is Steven wearing today during this luxury show).

As for black tux events...

What i will say is any event you get to wear your Wu-Tang jacket is a great event imho. Wearing the D&G vintage dark burgundy velvet cigar smoking jacket comes in a close second (plus it's rare as **** and incredibly well made as this was D&G pre...). Formal black tux events are waaaaaay down the list (turned a few down, actually).

Are you sure you really have to go to this event OP?

I used to go to two regimental dinners a year when a black tie was a must for both, but this is now whittled down to one as the other is now a lunch, wearing 'smart casual'.

And I must say the black tie dinner oozes an 'ocassion' whereas the smart casual lunch (wear what you like, really!) has the atmosphere of the local carvery!

There are certain things in life that gain in quality but in others it's a slow slide to mediocracy, but it's what most seem to want! They just cannot be bothered!

I agree. But these are the tailoring details that have ruined my life.

Most super rich ppl dress poorly though. They don’t really care about fashion or style.

Bezos, Musk, Gates, Warren, etc don’t dress well. Even Arnault is average at best.

If I look at midtown workforce, there’s a sea of navy pants, tan shoes, and “fun” socks. Jackets if any are generally stuck in that suitsupply 2010 look.

Don’t get me started on the dress shoe/sneaker hybrid abominations.

I always keep a tux or 2 around.

You never know when you might want a decent cup of coffee.

I hear you but those are very eccentric, self-made gentlemen. the rich people I know generally are conscious of how they dress. Most of the midtown workforce also isn't super rich and/or faces a work culture that may demand them to be low key. For example, I work in midtown and have never worn better than an IWC and Suit Supply slacks with a Bonobos shirt to my work, but I have AP, Zegna, Brioni, Loro Piana, etc. at home.

Americans in general are very style-adverse particularly white collar types who have to look like they are constantly being productive. I'd postulate that the explosion of the steel watch has to do with that because it's a low key way of status signaling.

If you take the direct flight from NYC to Milan, the style difference is like night and day.

That’s really smart, I back that idea. But I think it’s people in general who are style-averse, not just Americans generally.

This really isn’t the norm though. Most guys aren’t keeping a work closet of bland clothing so as to not one up their superior and then also having a higher end version of that same exact outfit for when not working.

Serious questions - what the “rich” you’re referring to? MD at IB or partner at law and up? C suite? People who found their own companies and cashed out? Either way most guys in general (across all income levels) don’t care that much about clothes.

The rich people I know generally didn’t earn their money at any job. The jobs you describe (IBD, biglaw) would be on the very low end of how their family money was made. I’m in my 30s so these are largely not self made individuals.

Personally I lost interest in clothing and wear the same stuff all the time. As for why wear lower cost items to the office? Largely it’s because I don’t see delicate, high end clothing as “work” clothes. Probably nobody would notice it, but why sit on a sticky subway seat with Zegna suit pants? Similar concept to not wanting to bang a Nautilus or Royal Oak against a work desk or keyboard. And also not wanting to mix work and play, in a sense.

You do see well dressed New Yorkers but they tend to be older Upper East Side men who order bespoke. Like major executives or company founders.

The real flashy dressers are down in Miami and Palm Beach.

Fair enough. I don’t wear certain items very often for similar reasons, but in truth the fabrics aren’t delicate at all and would probably look better if more “worn in”. I think that’s why I like mixing casual tailoring with classic ‘workwear’ — getting them a little bit ruined somehow feels more comfortable, even appropriate. To borrow and bend your watch analogy: like getting some scratches on a five-digit Explorer you wear everyday because it helps you imagine, even if you know it’s a lie, that your life is not so safe and narrow after all. Gulp.

Interesting comment about reserving the higher-end clothes for play rather than work; just by talking about this at all, I’m sure you dress with more thought than most people and are doing the opposite of the norm which is to “dress down” on days off.

I don't wear expensive clothes for fear of being accosted and having them stolen.

The few nice suits I have don’t get much wear anymore, but if they do it’s a social event. Maybe a wedding or a charity event with a dress code. It’s a more casual world for sure. I wear polo shirts most days. Agree it’s nice to use things and break them in — it’s the idea of wearing things out, while at work in service of “the man” that I resist

True. But one must persevere.

Sometimes dry humour needs a few tears to make it blossom.

I agree, i always try to stick to the dress-code only to find out the majority doesn’t. It seems to be more to establish the dress-code for women as they all comply. Was at a ‘dress-code: cocktail’ event last night and guys wore anything from shirts and sneakers to suits while all women were in cocktail dresses.

Style is a funny thing. Something that’s always changing, but which always stays the same. Nothing is ever truly new but simply rinse and repeat. Yesterday we were shopping and my wife starts sending me pics of herself in “new” 90’s style jeans. Ie jeans that look like the crap we wore from Abercrombie in 1997. They aren’t new. Merely recycled. I told her I would get her a new pair of Timberland Euros and a flannel shirt….. I’m at the point from a clothing perspective where I generally try to wear what fits me in more classic/timeless cuts. I want the shirt I buy today to still be relevant in 10yrs. One person I do look to for this sort thing is Ralph Lauren. I appreciate the fact that a huge part of the time you’ll see this guy in a white/black shirt and jeans. Done.
